Mouse is freaking out - Can it be reset?

    Hey everyone,

I use a KVM to switch between my A4000 and the Pegasos. Probably 20% of the time, the mouse freaks out in Morphos requiring me to reset the machine. (Mouse jumps around all over the place, and the left button clicks on any movement.)

Is there a way to reset the mouse (driver?) without having to reset the machine? This gets pretty frustrating as it sometimes does it much more frequently than others..

I've never tried to do such a thing, but I am interested in what kind of answer you'll get. When I rebuild my a1200, I may like to do something simular.

I had a similar problem with a certain brand of optical mouse. I changed to a different brand - Logitech - and it works fine all the time. My KVM is a Linksys. :-D

This is a Microsoft(:-o) IntelliMouse. I don't see why this shouldn't work better.. Even the Amiga 4000 I use has no issues switching back and forth (nor my PC) .. It's just Morphos.

I guess I should fire up Debian for a bit and see if this is a hardware issue or just in software. (This is kind of strange.. I kind of figured that if any of the machines would have a problem with a KVM, it'd be the A4000.

The KVM I'm using is a Belkin OmniCube 2 port. (I really want a 4 port KVM though. I'm getting tired of using the PC through VNC.)

It is more likely than not a problem of the switch and not of the mouse or MorphOS. KVM switches can do weird things and switching a serial protocol isn't trivial. Mine has no problem with the mouse but a lot of trouble with qualifiers and remembering their state - so much that I was forced to buy a second keyboard and use the KVM for video only. The KVM manufacturers seem to be aware of that, they usually build a shortcut into the KVM that resets the mouse protocol. Don't know what that key combination would be with your Belkin, look it up in the manual.

I looked it up under Belkin's FAQs.. They suggest unplugging the cable behind the KVM (in other words, unplugging the cable that goes to the Pegasos.) It doesn't work, so I guess I'm just going to have to live with the frustration at the moment.

I originally bought this just to switch between the Voodoo3/RGB ports on the A4000, but now I need something to go between my 3 machines. I've seen some that are decently priced on Ebay. Hopefully, they'll work better than this one.

    Hmm...

I had one really old mouse, that did the same thing without switch, connected directly to Pegasos...

The weird thing is, it seemed to happen only, when using keyboard and mouse simultaneously (Like when playing Quake :-) )

Well, I've changed mouse since then (Logitech wireless) and that problem hasn't re-appeared even once since then... So, I guess it's the mouse, that could be blamed in my case, but it still was rather "weird" problem...

I had the same problem. Mouse jumped on windows too. Its the problem of autodetection of mouse protocol. On linux it helped to hold all mouse buttons while connecting...

anyway, I switched to usb mouse :)

Well, I picked up yet another KVM recently, and now it's even worse than before. As soon as I switch away and back, MorphOS is unusable. I guess eventually, I'll just have to have a second mouse around.. For now though, MorphOS is going to get stuck with doing testbed work. :-(

Well, I have the same issue, when switching back & forth between a Linux PC and a MOS Peg1.

When switching to MOS, the mouse gets crazy (jumping to random positions & left clicking). When switching to Linux, it's the same but it calms down when I click repeatedly.

Any idea ? My switch is a Belkin OmniView E Series 2 Port KVM Switch (2*PS2 + VGA)

    cheers !

The problem is that the KVM needs to provide a proper keyboard and mouse emulation.

This emulation makes the computer think there is a non moving mouse/keyboard -of the same type- , because the "virtual" mouse/keyboard responds to commands even if the user is currently working on the second/third/fourth computer.

Without a proper emulation the computer is using wrong values. Especially the mouse is a big problem. Try unplug and replug a ps2 mouse from/to a ps2 connector of a computer. It won't work.

I used a 2 port KVM from Aten without any problem. Now I use this thingy http://www.geit.de/deu_fun4portkvm.html which also works fine.

    Hi
Sorry about your KVM probs. I can say that I've had a KVM hooked to my peg as long as I can remember and it works well with and Athlon box on the switch. I've had 2 KVM s now, 1 with Audio, 1 without. The only problem I've had is that when I go back to the windows mouse the Mouse Wheel doesnt work! Very weird. Also, sometimes I have to unplug the Peg if something goes funny with the KVM. Otherwise it works OK for years now. (but the mousewheel is annoying to say the least)
