I tried dragging an icon over the mimetypes window under video to have a default icon for all videofiles..doesn't work somehow.
Also tried to do only the .avi icon but also to no avail.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    Well, first, what doesn't work?

Do you see the icon when you drop it to the icon area in 'ambient - mime editor' window? If it's the case, then it just means that icon can't be created when saving, the reason being that the mime family directory doesn't exist in your deficon path.

For instance, for all video files, icons will be saved as: <deficonpath>/video/default.info.
For video/avi, it would be <deficonpath>/video/avi.info.

So, just make sure application/ text/ audio/ video/ ... dirs are created in your deficon path. And it's true ambient should create them automatically instead.

Fab which version of Ambient can you do this with now? I had no idea you got to this point. About a month ago I installed the nightl build from the Ambient site and it had some strange drive icons it attached to my system that looked like shortcut files. I never got any further then that after the rebot and reverted back to the last non debug version listed on the site.

Is there a debug free release of this one?

Yes, that effect was because of some rewritten code. You just need to "Put away" these icons and then open a "My Ambient" window and drop your drive icons onto the desktop again. Then everything will be fine ;)

Hi Acill, I wonder if can get one of this new night builds without debug too, about a 8 monts back i had a very fast but por ambient release, the speed of that old one was somenthing impressive when opening partition windows etc... but after i start to update ambient with NBs, my ambient get slowed and now when i click on my partition icons it still fast but not lighting speed like that old one, now after i double click in a partition icon on my desktop i need to wait something like about a second to see a window poping to ambient screen, an i still dont know what is causing this slow down :-? compared to that old one, any tips?

I know that new features may cause a slow down, but is this new implemented features in ambient so heavy to slow ambient like this?

Debug builds obviously have an impact on speed, especially as debug builds have memtracking enabled, which slows down things even more. But, speed-wise, current Ambient is rather faster than ever, even old 1.3x versions that could take more than 30s to display a few hundred files. :)

You can try to ask gunne to build both debug & non debug versions in nightly builds, or build it yourself. :)

Gunne, how about it? Can you build the latest nightly as a regular non dbug version for us?

    Hi,

Before several people start to create their own non-debug Versions of Ambient spread them and thereafter other ones ask why things work not for them, but for others (because nobody knows who did which version), I just want to state, that geit (Guido Mersmann) is offering a non-debug version for some time now.

    FTP
    Server: geitathome.dyndns.org
    Directory: /betas/Ambient
    Login: ambient
    Password: ambient

PS: Just got word from geit that this is his Pegasos which is running as server and it isn't switched on 24/7.
So, no reason to worry, if you aren't able to reach it. Just try at a different time.

    Bye HAK

    Hi Acill,

Just checked again (using copy/paste with my answer above) and the
    data are correct.

So, maybe this was one of the times where the server was overloaded.

Just try it at another time - at least I had no problems.

    Bye HAK
