    Hi everyone,

    I'm using SMBFS to share data between my linux box and my peg, and would like to ask you a question:

    Is there some way (through a script, I guess) to launch SMBFS (which mounts a SMBFS: volume) and then force ambient to display a volume icon?

    Thanks!

    Yes. Just make a script and an icon for it, and put it to Ambient Panel or create a shortcut on Ambient. Or why not just add the command into user-startup so it will be mounted on every boot?

    As for the icon, just copy a disk.info onto your samba-device. That takes care of it. Creating def_icon def_smbfs might also work.

    I've tried it but id doesn't work. But that does not surprise me...

    As a matter of fact, if no disk.info is present, ambient should have used the default disk icon present in RAM:ENV/sys/. However, it doesn't.

    It looks more like Ambient is not "notified" that a new device is present. So my question stands: is there any way of FORCING ambient to show an icon that links to a volume/drawer/whatever?

    Winterhunter, looks like u got smbfs to work :)

    Had the same problem under wb 3.9, as the
    device gets mounted when ambient/workbench is already up.

    Ive just put
    path smbfs: ((or ur volumename of the linux share)
    in the script.
    if this doesnt work try even
    diskchange smbs:

    Havent tried under ambient yet but this worked for 3.9....

    Are you sure you have configured smbfs correctly? I am using it since ages (meaning pre Ambient GPL) and it works without Problems. (And yes, if there is no disk.info icon, it will use the default one)

    I made a script which launches two instances (two machines)
    here is how it looks like (just for one machine, but you get how it works ;) ):

    Run >NIL: SMBFS Workgroup=KRASSLAN User=username Password=xxxxx Volume=Cerberus Service=//CERBERUS/C

    xxxx is of course your password ;) Please note that afair indeed the machines name is needed (or was that for Rdesktop?) and not the IP.

    Oh and which TCP Stack do you use?

    @dIGIMAN:
    Thanks for the info, I will try it tonight.

    @Bladerunner:
    I'm sure it works, I've moved 30 GB of data from my linux partition to my peg using SMBFS in the commandline; DOpus 4.17 does not like SMBFS and tells me that the source files are write-protected which they aren't (besides, I was using the copy function, not move, so what should it care about the source files being protected or not).

    I'm using MOSNet 0.17.

    Well, try another stack then.
    If even Dopus complain...
    It happens that I also use Dopus and at least there everything should be ok. So I assume (given that you configured smbfs correctly) that it`s MOSnets fault. Here it works ok with MiamiDX or Genesi.

    If it is stack-related, shouldn't I have problems transfering data? I mean, CLI copy, dir, delete, etc. works just fine.

    I use MiamiDX, and got no problems with SMBFS. I have disk.info on my servers root and when I mount them I immediately get drive-icons on Ambient.

    It didn't work, neither path nor diskchange!

    @All:
    I've forgot to mention it, but I'm running the "old" ambient (the
    official that comes with MOS 1.4.5... Maybe that changes something?

    I don't think so, I have had my smb-scripts for a long long time. From MOS1.3 at least.

    SMBFS volumes on ambient don't work with the mos1.4.5 release. I had the same problem and got one of the developers (itix) to fix it for me. So it should work in newer versions! :)

    Btw. same goes for NFS mounted devices!

    Do you mean newer Ambient (like the recent CVS compilations) or newer MOS? (That is almost a trick question ;-))

    BTW, I've noticed (with task manager) that I have some processes running (even when the devices are not mounted):
    CD0, DH0, DH1, DH2, USMD

    So, one process corresponding to each drive. But no process for SMBFS... So I was wondering whether I had to declare SOMEWHERE that a device called SMBFS will arrive (like a linux mount list).

    Newer version of ambient of course. ;-)

    All I do is run smbfs for the volumes I want, like what Bladerunner wrote earlier. No 'mountlist' needed.
