I've just got one of those new DVD-player
for which can play DivX movies as well.

I wonder if there is a tool for MOS
to encode a movie to XviD or DivX ?
I don't want to use Windows to feed my new player

I'm not quite sure, but maybe MPlayer port comes with Mencode?

mencoder is available here in morphzone download area (but it's maybe hard to use for beginners, commandline only).

but i ripped+encoded a few dvds with it already, works great. *dancingmrbananaandstuff*

Hi,

Thanks for bringing mencoder to my attention.
Something with a nice gui would probably be easier to start with but I'm not afraid to read the instruction to use mencode from command line. :)

Will I need an extra tool for ripping the DVD to disk?
I think copying the DVD to harddisk before converting
will be a good idea and will have the advantage to allow me
to return the DVD faster...

Tokai, how long does a 2pass DVD convertion take on Pegasos ?

It strongly depends on options and transformations... When I was converting a DVD movie to DivX, it made between 6 and 18 fps... Depending on target resolution...

Made on P2/G4.

6 fps is sounding a little bit slow for a G4.
Is this an Altivec enhenced MEncoder or the G3 version ?

is there a new mencoder version available, with the better DeCSS stuff the latest mplayer has built in ? With the old mencoder I can't rip DVDs from my DVD-ROM :(
