How is it possible to install PegXMac on HD? The boot-option "tohd=/dev/hda7" like in the "manual" has no function, it boots normal from CD-Rom, that's it. On my hardware hda7 has a Linux file-system.

Yes it is possible, and I have done it.

You need another linux partition and then you must copy the knoppix folder and "KNOPPIX" file onto that partition, so it is in the same structure as it is on the pegXmac CDROM. Then you need to copy the boot image (on the root of the pegXmac cd) to your Boot partition (bi0:). Then you just type the same boot arguments at the OF prompt, replacing boot /pci/ide/cd (or cdrom on peg2) with boot boot (or whatever you name the boot image), then pegXmac will start up and search all available linux partitions and eventually find where you have placed the knoppix folder and knoppix file. You can even configsave to that directory (it will be mouned as /cdrom after pegXmac boots), and then you can re-load your configuration.

Using bootcreator I have a boot menu and I just select pegXmac (hard disk) and it boots from my bio: partition, finds /dev/hda7 (where I have copied the knoppix folder and file) and then it mounts itself as /cdrom. To restore my config I just type configrestore /cdrom/config.tgz, then i type startmol -X and it works....MUCH faster than CDROM!

I wanted to do this too, but after I created the linux partition a stupid problem arrived: HOW TO COPY FILES IN IT!? :-p

I have no linux distros on my HD and from MorphOS side I don't see the linux partition (only 'created' thanks to SCSIConfig) so how to copy the knoppix file in it?
    Thanks for the eventual suggestions!

Hi Miky060, you can copy using the PegXmac CD, i did that with the cp command, if i remember rigth was like "cp -rR KNOOPIX /dev/hdax" but i may have copied the wrong dirs an files to start the HD version as my HD startup for MOL is not working, so i will try again later with some info from this forum ;-) .

    good luck.

I already have a setup with OSX 10.2 running with only 96MB of RAM for MOL :-( , i guess this is far i can go with only 256MB of RAM on my Peg2.

Can someone tell us wath is the limitation memory for a 256MB Peg2 with PegXMac ? i mean can i setup a MOL with 128, 132, 160, 192... or less like my setup with have only 96, this is far i can go with a stable setup, anything high then this will start to freeze my setup, ramdomized freezes :-? .

I have a Mandrake 9.1 running on my PegII, I had been told that would be one of the easiest Linux. (SuSE is unfortunally so extrem old that is does not make any sense). But what I wanted to say: I thought I've managed to mount my hda7 partition (which I prepared first with a Linux File System from Morphos-side), then I've koppid the KNOPPIX-Folder with its content to hda7. the "boot"-file I've copied from Morphos-side to the boot-bartiton. Then booting works best, PegXMac is looking for the Knoppix File system and finds - nothing.

What did I do wrong? How does it realy work with the stuff on the PegXMac CD without an installed Linux?

Hi Mikey, you will have to format the linux partition (with ext2 filesystem) you created and then copy the files from the pegxmac cd to that partition, so it is in the same structure as it was on the CD. Then copy the boot image to your bi0: partition (use morphos for that). See my first post for how to boot it once that is done.

I had alot of freezing as well, during Mac OS X install. Here are some other tips:

For OSX 10.2: Leave the ram default at 96 megs
For OSX 10.3: Set the memory to 128 megs.

I would also highly recommend you have a linux swap partition setup, as pegXmac (MOL) will use that as extra memory for the Mac. After you have OSX installed you can experiement adjusting the amount of ram allocated. But during install remember the 96 megs for 10.2 and 128 megs for 10.3. This should work on a peg-1 (with april2) and a peg-2.

Also wasn't succesful at installing MacOS-X as Mac OS always freezes at installing disc 2. Altivec is disabled.
Will try to use less memory (128 instead of 650).
Would also like to copy my PegXMax distro to hd. I know how to create a linux partition under MOS. But how do I format it from within Linux then ? Only have PegXMac and no other Linux distro. Also have no experience with Linux at all. How can I make the new partition bootable ? Is selecting mount and boot option in SCSI-Config enough ?

I just want say that i installed yesterday a new PegXmac setup + Panther in a 6Gb partition in a very fast Maxtor 20Gb HD, this partition is over the 8Gb limit and everthing worked very well, i used alsa, dma, and 384MB of ram for MOL, and i get not just one little freeze ;-) , everthing working "out of the box", so i guess the "limiting mol memory" during the install is humm??? fake, my install time was just 20 minutes, very good i guess.

Now how can i change the configmolrc.macosx file to do not have to change all the time i want to start my mol setup ?

I mean i have tryed "configsave" but without look, can someone give a tip about this detail.

Can i decompress, change something in KNOPPIX and recompress again ? how ?
How the KNOPPIX are compressed ? with compressor gz, Z, zip, rar, tar :-D.

See that way i´ll customize my MOL boot and get no needs to change stuffs in boot process.
