The kernels probably were not compiled with pegasos support. Here is a good way to get started:

    Download http://people.debian.org/~luther/debian-installer/daily-powerpc-built/current/powerpc/netboot/vmlinuz-chrp.initrd

and copy it into your bi0 partition. Then boot it in the following manner:

    boot /pci/ide/disk@0,0:0 vmlinuz-chrp.initrd devfs=mount

add an optional video=radeon:1024x768@60 statement if you wish.

Select the testing distribution. It will be installed over the network.

If that particular build does not work, try one of the earlier ones. I just did this last week without any problems.

Ultraspec: I have tried that endless times. The base system installs fine. I then go to the setup after a reboot and select th epackages to install. I pick just the basic ones. After it starts installing them after they all download it errors out telling me one or more failed to install. So I gave up.

I've downloaded the pegxlin.iso from linux.pegasosppc.com, and tried to install it over my Peg2 according to the readme file, but it fails to boot even the install image. It says:
    returning 0x00010000 from prom_init

    What's wrong?

Has PegXLin been updated with Pegasos II support yet?
"Returning 0x00010000 from prom_init" is correct, right after that it should activate the framebuffer device.

    Occurs the same here, Acill.

It seems that after installing the base system, the peg2's ethernet port is no longer recognised by kernel so that it is impossible to download any packages from internet... maybe?

Any help will be appreciated ! :)

No I get the packages to download just fine after I reboot from the base system install. Its when they are all complete and start to decompress and setup they bomb out. Its a mess and I am no longer going to try it.

There are two ways to install Linux easily onto
    a Pegasos:

    http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer
    http://www.gentoo.org

Both should support Pegasos out of the box, right
now, although technically the Debian Installer
is in a developmental stage, our own Sven Luther
is beavering away at it to make it work properly
    on Pegasos :)

With Gentoo you basically download the LiveCD
ISO, and you can either install pre-built files
for PowerPC, G3 or G4 optimizations - or you
can BUILD THE ENTIRE SYSTEM FROM KERNEL UPWARDS
    from scratch.

As you might guess, this gives you performance
and customisation that is unheard of in most
operating systems on the market. A standard
install takes about 30 minutes. Compiling a full
system takes the best part of a day. But DAMN
    you can tell the difference.

Everyone go buy a $10 Gentoo CD right now!

I've got the new Gentoo live CD and it does boot just fine with some instructions I got off the Linux.pegasosppc site forum. As for easy to install that is not true. It boots, then goes to a console and you need to manually put everything on as far as I can tell. One day I will be able to install linux on this damn machine!

There is a graphical installer in development for Gentoo. The majority of the Gentoo userbase prefer the current installation method though as it gives you complete control of what to install. Gentoo will not try to forcefeed you things you might not want, like KDE, Gnome or any other really large application.

    For Elektro:

It works! I have installed it yesterday, and only one problem
appeared. I have PegII with OF from april 2004, Voodoo5 PCI,
256MB/400MHz ram. Problems was with current boot kernel, so I
tried older (vmlinuz-2.4.24-pegasos) and it works with network
instalation. Probably it`s current version is not fully functional on
Pegasos, so I can advert only kernel named vmlinuz-x.x.xx-pegasos. I
can examine it`s use in short if you want...

At outbursts like this I think to myself: does this fellow really wants linux? What you described is what linux is about. No surprise or hidden catches.

No outburst intended. i have just had a real hard time with the Debian installer. Its failed every time, locks up part way through, or just wont complete after all the packages are installed. I just want linux installed.

i am excited about the Gentoo release. I like it a lot. I just havent had the time to go through the install guide yet is all.

The instructions for Gentoo are very good... it is a lot easier to install than it looks.

As for Debian, I sometimes had problems while installing which I thought were due to bugs. This is no longer the case. Last week I installed using an image from the link I posted and it worked fine.

You know what warface? You took the word right out of my mouth :D

I really don't understand people trying to install Linux not really knowing what they will
use it for or better installing it only to try to run MacOS and when they find some standard
Linux issues (like Gentoo LiveCD leaving them with console) cry that Linux suxx.

I do belive that Linux can be used by anyone, but in my opinion for the people who can't
install it themselves it can be a real pain and because of that it would be really nice if they
could have it installed by someone who know what he's doing. Problem with Pegasos in this case is
that it's quite rare among Linux users and even the "local guru" can have some problems for a first time.

But when Linux is installed and configured properly it runs really somoothly and without
any major problems (providing you know what you want to use it for ;)).

    M.
PS. BTW reading about problems with installation makes me remember my first days with Pegasos
(which I bought only to run Linux) when there was no suitable kernel (or no kernel at all) and
when I installed Gentoo with great help from Sven (he provided me with a lot of info and
custom built kernels - thanx a lot). Imagine the system running almost fine with an exception of
no console driver (only serial terminal), no sound, no X's no nothing. But I think it was one
of the first Gentoo installed on Pegasos II. I was really proud of myself :D

First let me say I use linux on X86 all the time. My only problem is getting it installed on the Pegasos II I have. Its not as easy as on a X86 system. I like it and just want to dump the PC once and for all.

Please avoid using genkernel at this time. The genkernel maintainer hasn't gotten my Pegasos patches merged with it yet so it will probably not build a working kernel.
We are splitting the ppc kernels into benh, ppc64, and pegasos kernels to make it easier on users. Hopefully we will have them ready in a couple of days, first we need to clarify how to organise patches among the different kernels.

I have updated my webpage http://dev.gentoo.org/~dholm/ppc.html with some information on using Gentoo on the Pegasos and I have gotten some feedback on the handbook from tokai. Please let me know if you find any problems with the handbook or sections which are difficult to understand and I will do my best to update it. Feel free to e-mail me suggestions to dholm@gentoo.org.
