G4 not fast enough?

    This one is of those E-UAE questions again: isn't a G4 1.6Ghz fast enough to play (all/most?) whdload games at full speed? Or is it E-UAE is crippled to the point that SWOS 95/96 won't run at full speed? Because sadly I noticed heavy fps drops while ingame and generally speaking, the gameplay was (in comparison) much - much worse than my 15 years old experience with a primitive WinUAE version and an Athlon 1Ghz with 512MB Ram.

    Perhaps there is a way to boost settings through the configuration?
    Here below is my own, what do you think about it?

    My old config files from the e-uae setup I have been ussing back on 2008 on my Pegasos 2 system.
    Never had a problem ussing them.
    I think your system is killer and blazing fast, it would do grest on some Amiga emulation.

    640x512 is hires laced. SWOS native resolution is 320x200. So a 320x200 or 320x256 resolution may speed up the emulation.

    Also, used E-UAE JIT.

    Change cpu_speed to 'real' (ie = cpu_speed=real). With max you'll end with 100% cpu usage whatever you do. On my powerbook 1.67Ghz, EUAE takes about 30% cpu.

    @Daff

    Are you sure that E-UAE JIT will work with WHDLoad games?
    I am sure I 've read that there are still are severe incompatibilities with many games.

    @all

    Thanks for your suggestions. Will try them later tonight once I return home :)

    Are you using fullscreen? Your E-UAE display is scaled from 320x256 to 1280x1024 by E-UAE, which is very slow. Try to lower it.

    Strang, it looks like if I use cpu_speed=real instead of max, there are is fps drop while ingame but there are two distictive pauses when euae loads: a) A blank (black) screen before Workbench 3.1 loads and b) after whdload has load the game (again a blank-black screen).. Nothing else does the trick (lowering the resolution or enabling overlay). I will test it with more games though..

    I searched more: there seemed to exist an old version of WHDLoad SWOS 95/06 that experienced lag during gameplay (like the one I faced). What is odd, is that it gets fixed if I set the cpu speed to "real" and gets back with "max". Anyway, I will search for a newer version. Btw, the G4 speed seemed adequate to run Aladdin, so it must be ok generally speaking. On a different matter, does anyone know if there is a whdload version of SWOS with updated rosters? I did something similar myself a couple of years ago (by patching the files provided by SensibleSoccer.de) but now I am looking for a ready solution.

    Even a slow Pegasos2 emulates most games at full speed. At least it did >10 years ago, when I played with it.

    You need a proper setup and avoid software scaling.
