If Eric is still interested in working on Libre Office around work, but is committed to travelling with work, doesn't that suggest a Powerbook would be the perfect dev machine for him?
Just throwing it out there, as he may just be not interested in the project anymore, but it's nice to have a hobby you can take with you when travelling with work.
If he IS interested in this approach, PM me and we'll thrash out getting him a Powerbook within the next 2 weeks*. That £100 I was going to throw at the bounty could be used to get a Powerbook ASAP.
If he's Europe-based, I can set it up and ship it out from here (UK) - I have the time, and it'll be quicker & cheaper.
PS - Learning MUI by tackling a port of Libre Office sounds like mental suicide.
* ie 10 June 2013, not "two more weeks".
