I installed Scriba 1.9.7 the other day and I noticed that the screen flickers at times and the mouse pointer (cursor) is slow to respond. Is this normal in Scriba or are there settings that I need to adjust?

    I'm running MorphOS 3.3 in a MacMini G4 1.5GHz.

    I welcome your help.

Can't help you with the SnoopDOS output unfortunately, but I have basically the same setup as you, but I don't experience a flickering screen, but the mouse pointer is slow to respond, in fact the whole program is generally slow to respond, copying/cutting//pasting text, etc. Basically it's slow.

Carsten has gone to a lot of work to get it where it is, but it still needs some additional speed to function better. I don't know why it is so slow, as when it's only doing wordprocessing it should be very quick on such modern hardware, but Wordworth runs rings around it - just for wordprocessing.

However, Wordworth can't save as a PDF or open more up-to-date formatted documents, or import full colour images, etc. So there's a lot to be said for the program, it just needs some additional 'tweaking' initially as it offers quite a lot for a "simple wordprocessor" as Carsten conservatively describes it.

You may also find that sometimes if you page down, using the page down keys on the keyboard, and then click in the text on say the 2nd, or 3rd page the cursor does not move to there, but you have to go back to where you left the cursor and click on it to free its movemnt up again, and then it will jump to where you click the mouse - been reported.

Early versions of Gribouillis was as slow as Scriba (ie. mouse cursor was slow to respond). But Yomgui fixed partially this problem in the v3 release. So perhaps there is a solution also for Scriba?

I have a PMAC 3.1 with MOS 3.3. + latest Chrysalis and Scriba is blazing fast.

Are you sure that isn't symptom of running out of graphics memory? That might cause temporary glitches and stalls on mouse movement. For example when opening big window or resizing etc.

Otherwise I haven't used Scriba that much, just occasional tests, but I haven't had problems with mouse pointer. Typing is quite slow though, I can type faster than it draws characters on screen. I have Mac mini 1.5GHz too.

I agree with jPV, I too can type faster than Scriba can keep up - not that I'm a speed typist you understand, it's just that Scriba is really slow, and importing a page or so of text, as a Paste command leaves you waiting for about 10 seconds for it to set it all out on the screen.

The lack of keyboard commands to copy/paste a line of text, which should be the basics of a wordprocessor just leaves me amazed that Carsten doesn't think this this is an important basic yet essential feature. I have mentioned it to him, but he states there is a copy/paste/cut keyboard command, and there is a menu to select a line/sentence, but often you just need that direct control over words/sentences/paragraphs, etc. to work efficiently, and quickly with a wordprocessor.

I really like some of the neat features with Scriba, but the word processing should be the most important feature of a wordprocessor.

I want Scriba to be a success, but at the moment some of its basics just don't 'cut the mustard' - are not running at the speed, and have the feature set, you should be able to expect/hope of software running on the current version of MorphOS.

I still wish Carsten every success with his Scriba project
