Good suggestion! However, if I go through the effort to almost completely disassemble this Mac mini, I'll just replace that 40GB drive by an SSD. I have a 128GB M.2 SSD laying around, which would give it 3 times the space and make it a bit faster anyway. I'd still like to test the HD to see what the problem really is, but it may be hard to find another computer with PATA interfaces nowadays.
