How do I check if Helios is up and running?

There is no GUI for Helios. You can use the Debug.sbar and open it, call the log file from there (first menu item) and scroll to the bottom to check what was the last message written to the log. Then connect your Firewire device and open a new log file. You should see new messages which would tell you that Helios detected your device. The messages are not self-explaining, though. Possibly from the IDs you can ask your favourite search engine for details what has been detected. As long as you plug in only one device at a time and inspect the changes in the debug log file, you will see that "something" was detected.

I did a showconfig and firewire seems to be recognised ...

I did that on my PowerBook and got a full system lockup on first call. I had to power down the PowerBook. After a new start showconfig did not stall. But it also did not report the iSight camera that I connected. I don't know if it could report Firewire devices, at least not mine.
