Even for me, I think I can choose wisely :).
Should I just get a standard PCI card or one of the small connector options? Does it matter on this Mac?

I can see 3 supported Ethernet chipsets mentioned on the official list of supported hardware:
- RTL8029: 10MbE
- RTL8139: 100MbE
- RTL8168: 1000MbE (GbE)
Unless you already have one of those at hand, it should be obvious which one to obtain
