After some research I found out, there are 3 different recent versions of SimpleMail I can use on MorphOS. 0.40-MOS, 1.1-MOS and 0.41-68k.

I tried out 1.1-MOS first and I got IMAP via SSL working for my 3 mail accounts. But unfortunately this version crashed very often. As the 1.1-MOS fork is discontinued I suppose it is not very worthwile to file bugs against this version?

I tried out 0.40-MOS second but this one failed to connect to the mailservers after it asked me for my passwords. Before I installed AmiSSL as I learned 0.40-MOS has no compiled-in OpenSSL.

What's left is trying out 0.41-68k hoping I get IMAP via SSL working.

Any advice? Will there be a native 0.41 for MorphOS?

In my experience SimpleMail is too buggy for any use. I tried to use it, 68k and native version, it just crashes and trashes random memory.

I used SM for years, one day I just stopped. Now I use web interface with elinks. Dunno if YAM is better - I did not like it.

No Crashes with POP3.

Don't use any version which uses AmiSSL v3 at least, it trashes memory pretty badly (you can expect OWB crashing and other random things to happen if you do use it).

68k version did use the buggy AmiSSL v3 at least earlier.. probably still. And that's why 0.40 MorphOS build uses AmiSSL v1 instead, but unfortunately v1 isn't compatible for example with gmail anymore.

I've been using SimpleMail 1.1 MorphOS (which uses openssl instead of amissl) lately and it's been working quite fine with POP3 and SSL...

It is not a big problem since I can use Claws Mail (also a pretty fast email client) on the same machine via Linux. But it would have been much nicer to be able to read my mail via MorphOS.

There has been some work done on https://github.com/jens-maus/amissl in order to provide an updated AmiSSL. I'm not aware of the current state, though.

I am not sure if AmiSSL was ever great idea. OpenSSL API (that AmiSSL is based on) is unstable i.e. it is incompatible in newer versions. It is just less effort to link against openssl and scrap shared library model. Years ago I was also looking for shared openssl until I was adviced to scrap that idea :) Newer versions appear to be more stable in that regard, though.

OpenSSL is in the MorphOS SDK and was updated just few months ago.

Interestingly enough the 68K-Version of SimpleMail 0.41 runs smoothly on my Powerbook and I am able to connect to my several IMAP mailboxes.

Unforntunately I cannot use encryption since SimpleMail supports PGP 2.63 only which does not like my 'modern' GnuPG 2.0.x keys from my Linux machine.

Heard that AmiSSL developement still continues. Nice! :) But is the necessary for the MorphOS and Amiga OS 4 versions of SimpleMail - I thought openssl support is already built in?

In v0.42 for MorphOS, yes. OS4 has two variants of v0.42, one using AmiSSL and the other one with built-in OpenSSL.

I use SimpleMail 0.42 OpenSSL MorphOS Version and this version works with POP3 without problems.
