Does a Mac Mini benefit much from additional RAM & an SSD?

    Hi all,

I'm getting a Mac Mini shortly for MorphOS. I wanted to do some upgrades but am not sure how much benefit they will provide. The machine is a 1.5GHz G4 with 512MB RAM and a mechanical hard drive.

Will upgrading the RAM to 1GB (max for a Mac Mini I think?) and / or replacing the hard drive with an SSD provide much of a performance increase? The SSD would replace the stock internal drive and boot directly into MorphOS.

Does MorphOS support TRIM on SSDs?

    Thanks for your help!

    hi !

    Yes MacMini memory is 1Go.

MacMini has a IDE interface ... for SSD read this :

Or you can find 7200TRM disk.

Upgrading to 1GB (yes physical max with Mac mini) helps a lot with web browsing. With 512MB you'll be restarting the browser all the time to free the memory WebKit has leaked. Even with 1GB you'll have to do it occasionally, but it'll be much more comfortable.

For other uses it's not so critical, but 512MB would be a bit too little for the most demanding games for example. And of course the more memory you have the more you can use Ram Disk for temporary usage too (like unpacking archives there etc).

I haven't dared to go to SSD route myself yet, but from comments by others it sounds to be quite noticeable speedup for MorphOS too.

I'm using a IDE/PATA to mSATA adapter and a mSATA SSD and it works like a charm.

As far as i know SSDs connected via an IDE-Port do not support TRIM at all, you need an SATA-interface for that.

If you plan to use another OS besides MorphOS an SSD will be a BIG speedup! On MorphOS I do not miss an SSD much, it runs already quite fast from HDD. For comparison: Regular PCs running Windows or Linux from SDD feel as fast as running MorpOS from HDD. :-D
