You probably downloaded an Ambient build that has debugging enabled, which slows things down considerably (especially visible with Powerup).
I think the link that Framiga quoted is an Ambient build without debugging. It should run much faster. Also try to reduce gradients in MUI4 etc. to speed things up.
That's right. I can say from my expirience that the debugless version of Ambient 1.43 not only it's not slower than v1.41 but it is actually faster!!
If you have a lot of partitions, i think it's a good idea to disable volume gauges to get a marginal speed boost.
