0.4 supported more gfx drivers only because the whole graphics environment was emulated. The new, native components of 1.4.5 are not compatible with the old gfx drivers. This has nothing to do with "direct hammering" of the hardware, the internals of the OS simply changed too much (or rather, were actually implemented by us).
