I lost my mind today and decided to buy computers again. My desired available MorphOS compatible is a 17 inch Aluminum PowerBook G4. I did not get that machine yet. But I found for $70.00 USD Including Shipping is an iBook G4 1.33 ghz. This will be my first attempt at MorphOS.

If I can successfully install MorphOS, I will pay for MorphOS this summer.

    I have several bad questions:

When MorphOS 3.6, 3.7, etc. have been released, will I have to pay the 133 EUR each time?

How do I burn the ISO onto a disc? Will a DVD+R disc work? Is it possible to boot from USB? I prefer to try this from USB instead. Can I initialize a USB Stick Drive with the HFS (I have done this before) and boot from it (I have done this before too - Mac OS 9) but would the MorphOS .ISO function in that environment?

These questions get more annoying: How durable is a g4 iBook? a g3 rarely gets warm but the mhz is lower in them so of course they would not get as hot. If any g4 are unlikely to over heat, then ... I will only say that the reason why I collect these PowerPC and ARM devices is because of the durability. If this is true, then ...

Please, continue to support durable hardware. [ *runs away. ]

If this attempt is successful, I will be delighted. I did not expect to use MorphOS until next year.

MorphOS 2.0 started the current licensing scheme. Every single update since 2.0 has been free and there is no announced change to this yet.

I recommend CDRW, because versions do chage. Often.

    Have a great experience :-)

I (and many others) bought MorphOS 2.0 and had 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 for free. I suspected that I'd have to buy another license for 3.0 since it was a major version bump, but it turned out that this upgrade was free as well, and then we have had 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5 for free, and the upcoming 3.6, etc, etc will also be free! :-)

Maybe there will be a new license required for a hypothetical MorphOS 4.0, but then we are possibly talking about a "new" OS for other HW architectures like x86 or ARM anyway, so that would kind of make sense IMHO...

True, but once you have it installed, it is possible to update directly from the downloaded ISO-file without burning.

Hope it fulfills your expectations - If you run into any trouble getting set up, the forums usually provide pretty helpful support.

No. There's been nothing extra to pay since 2.x was first released (1.x was free anyway).
The license is limited to your hardware though, so if you upgrade to a different machine in future then you'd have to pay for a new license for the new machine.
If your current machine breaks and you replace it you can transfer the licence from the old one for free though.
Most updates have introduced support for new machines, so MorphOS team gets new registrations from existing users upgrading - it's a fairly organic approach which doesn't leave any users stuck using old versions - a damn fine approach in my opinion.

How do I burn the ISO onto a disc?

Any bunring program will work, but make sure to "burn image to disk", not just create a disc with the ISO file on it (an easy mistake to make). If you're not sure, just check the disc contents afterwards - you should see C, Devs, Libs, S, etc. If you don't see these and just see morphos-3.x.iso on the disc then you've done it wrong.

    Yes

Yes, but for a first attempt I'd recommend using a disc.
If you go ahead with USB, This will prove useful (thanks Jacek).

Probably possible, but complicated. You'd have to put the ISO (not the files) onto the stick and pass a boot arguement pointing to the ISO as a boot source. HFS doesn't (afaik) support Amiga protection bits, so copying the files/directories onto USB is likely to result in FUBAR.

    Pass.

Hope you get your iBook set up successfully, just to reiterate I'd recommend keeping it simple to start with, and stick to the recommended method of burning a disc and booting.

Including 2.0 itself (and not counting 3.5.1), MorphOS has had 14 updates so far. 7 of those have introduced support for new machines:

    12" or 14" ?

The 1.33GHz 12" us the last model and comes with a Radeon9550 and the multitouch USB trackpad, while the 1.33GHz 14" is the 2nd to last model with a Radeon9200 and the 1 finger only ADB trackpad.

Or would it make sense afterall? ;) Because you already have to pay for different platforms, so you naturally pay for x86/ARM versions even with current scheme too =)

    It is the 12".

    It arrived yesterday.

Also I decided to just use the DVD installation. It was actually very easy and very fast.

I am typing this with MorphOS now! And the startup time is very fast!

Unfortunately I don't know how to use MorphOS.

I am experiencing difficulty installing applicaations. Every attempt has failed. Am I installing them wrong? Or will they not function until I register MorphOS?

How do I turn off the computer? Sometimes, closing the screen lid will turn it off. Pressing Power Button restarts it.

And I can't find any menu bars.

I have found a few shortcut keys.
The CONTROL Key seems to "Select All", "Cut", "Copy", "Paste", etc.
The OPTION Key seems to function as COMPOSE CHARACTER. `¹²³¢¼½¾·«»-=å°©®þ€µ¡ø¶[]\æßðFGHJK£;'±×窺¸,../

What does the COMMAND Key do?

Panels can be found in menu or in ambient prefs.
For app installation I recommend geits grunch.
Hold power button for a few secs or quit ambient from menu to turn computer off.

It won't power off on lid close, you need to do it manually. If you want to power it off via Power Button, you have to press it for several seconds, otherwise it will just reboot.
There is some shutdown option in the ambient desktop which is also available via COMMAND-q key afair.

They are usually hidden and show up context related on right mouse button press (which is also available by pressing right options/command key together). On touchpad, this is usually achieved by using two fingers if that is enabled in touchpad preferences. This only works with the latest iBook model, though.
There is also some tool called ShiftClick in Utilities/Commodies on the system partition to enable right click via left click + some additional keyboard qualifier like ctrl key.
