Yesterday I was wandering on computer related italian sites to advice about incoming days of Pianeta Amiga exhibit (Pianeta Amiga site), and I found this harsh article of 2012 about MorphOS 3 on Appunti Digitali

http://www.appuntidigitali.it/17354/test-allacqua-di-rose-su-morphos-3/

The author is a programmer so he sees problems of morphOS just from a point of view as programmer, and not deals about its usability or its features.

The title image (a warn sign about bugs in the morphos garden), says it all about the point of view of author.

Google translate to read italian text, or ask italian friends to translate...

And so, what now?
If you had read threads here and there (MorphZone, Meta-MorphOS, Nonsoloamiga, AmigaNews and maybe others) you would have known about this. I expressed my personal opinion (read comment #33) writing I would have waited for three more years so to have a stable version of MorphOS but I remember a new OS version was asked persistently at that time. I had no serious problem after installing 3.0 on Powermac MDD and Pegasos but many people have had a lot. Sure the 3.0 was a not really mature version and the author of that article, Cesare di Mauro, is asking if it wouldn't have been better to use a procedure called "unit testing" or to develop a test suite to check the important part of MorphOS considering this operating system needs a licence that a user has to buy. In short: if I pay a product I would buy a good product not a bugged product and so do all you can to guarantee a good quality to buyers. That's not a so harsh statement. Personal and questionable, for sure!
Assuming MorphOS developers have those testing programs or personal methods to do this kind of work this article point on that direction and though I am not totally agree with author's opinion (in my personal opinion it's a little exageration compare MorphOS or other so called hobby-OS to Microsoft an their programmers/testers and so on) I considered for what it is: an opinion. I've read the part in which describes the very good features of MorphOS too (read the first part of the article, line 7 to 17) and the last part in which he wrote he hope this situation could be modified in a short time. MorphOS is in its 3.3 stage now (almost after a year) and some problem are solved while others are obviously not. I guess there is more to come...

I doubt this would have worked well for MorphOS.

> MorphOS is in its 3.3 stage now (almost after a year)

What does "almost after a year" refer to?

I dont think it is that harsh. There is room for criticism. Maybe just should point out that flash plugin is unfixable... either accept its flaws or remove it.

@ dan, I use Flash every day, but not by choice.

@ itix, you can't blame our developers for not being able to clone a closed application.

AND its not completely unusable, just not very useful.

For a lot of things I just spoof a iPad.

Its odd how Apple's refusal to use Flash gets them special treatment.

I was referring to the amount of time passed between the 3.0 and 3.3 releases to point that a short time was necessary to MorphOS developers to upgrade their work. Actually that part of my comment lacks of many words 8)

Yes! Absolutely... It is not Apple that must comply with standards on the web, but it must be the websites being compatible with Apple products...

Being famous sure is a bonus and makes people (and electronic firms) about to receive advantages amongst other people.

By the way,; get spoofed as iPad makes some sites as Youtube to refuse playing videos if the owners decide to not share it on mobile devices!

I think nobody should fear some criticism. Not even MorphOS developers.
To be honest, Cesare exaggerated the problems of the 3.0 release. They were mainly compatibility problems. MorphOS now supports more than 70 different machines, and a dozen of different graphic cards (sometimes event with different firmwares). Given that there are about 20 developers and possibly a dozen of betatesters, it is clear that some hardware combinations won't be tested before a release, whatever testing approach is taken. What is important is that the problems indicated in those threads have all been resolved with the following releases of the OS. Waiting more time for the 3.0 release would not have made it better, it was good enough on the tested hardware, which was the vast majority.
I am more than happy with the quality of the MorphOS releases after 2.0. And for me this is enough.

@Jambalah
Which problems have not been resolved yet? I think the 2 users that had problems on those threads now can use MorphOS successfully...

Kind regards,
Andrea

@Guruman:
maybe Mac mini didn't reach 12000 fps at 240x128 with Quake?!? =D (does it remember anyething?)
Seriously, I noticed that some of so called "problems" aren't real problems. As you wrote one can find some compatibility problems and/or little other issues easily solvable. I use MorphOS as main system and I find it really stable end enjoyable and I'm sure that behind the scenes there are a lot of other things we can't notice as simple users. So when I speak about "problems" I mean those which developers could find when developping and fine-tuning the OS.
Sorry for not to be so much clear some time...
