I'm after a cheap *BSD or Linux VPS based in the UK or EU (Due to lack of proper data protection and privacy laws in the less civilised parts of the world such as the USA ;-) ).

I need SSH access to a bash shell and the capability to install subversion/git.

Can anyone reccomend any reliable providers?

It would probably help if you mentioned a price range that you are willing to pay.

Hetzner, as recommend by pampers, have a good reputation but they do charge more than others.

    Around 10GBP per month.

I've seen this one for 7.20GBP per month (with voucher code), but i have no idea how good it is, just that it's cheap and seemingly decent enough specs.

I only want it for remote subversion/git and hosting a Grunch repo.

    This "VPS1024" package looks good.

    4 CPU Cores
    1GB RAM
    90MB Storage
    600GB Bandwidth

    All for 12Euros per month.

Looks pretty tempting from where i'm sitting but i know next to nothing about server hosting and the like.

I already bought my domain name from elsewhere. I'm assuming it's pretty simple to point it at the IP address of this virtual server if I buy the VPS package from these guys?

What do you reckon? Worth the money and suitable enough for my modest needs?

Well I just went for it and signed up for that package with a 64bit Debian 7 installation.

I googled for a promo code and got 20% off per month for life too so it's only costing me £8.18 per month too. :)

I'll be sure to post back here if they turn out to be a bad host!
