Starcraft was a late comer to the PC gaming world. Most people think of it as an early game. Truth is I remember trying to play Diablo on a 400mhz windows machine and it all but dieing. I never found a PC to play Starcraft or Diablo correctly till I got a 1ghz machine. Not surprising as much memory as those games need that they don't do well.

BTW: Windows XP with pci turned on will run a WHOLE lot faster than windows98 using ISA card emulation. I installed both. Follow my instructions at the top of this thread for XP and it should perform better. If you want, I can put up an ftp server and just let you download my setup. It is not that awefully big. Maybe 5GB.

I am wondering if the branch of b.o.c.h.s. we use (2.6.1) has any of the performance enhancements from this mans personal mods to 2.3.5:

bochs supports 16bit color up to 800x600.
are you using ISA or PCI motherboard emulation?
have you gone into windows settings to set the color depth to 16bit?

Well, I'm outta ideas. I've succesfully installed Windows XP under BOCHS, enabled the vbe extension, downloaded the drivers that bash64 pointed to in his first post, but Windows won't recognize them as proper for my emulated "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)"! Anyone tried that with success? Where are the working drivers for that?

    OK, now that's what I did. I've:

    - downloaded the latest version of driver (vbempk.zip), unpacked it, made an .iso file with mkisofs
    - ran BOCHS pointing to said .iso as CD-ROM
    - copied the drivers over to emulated harddrive
    - installed the driver (success!)

But! After restart BOCHS refused to use screenmode other than 640x480 in 16 colours (insane!).
I went to sleep solemnly promising myself to try again with the earlier driver the next day. Much to my suprise when I booted again Windows happily opened up in 800x600 16 bits. I've even managed to set the hardware acceleration to "full" in advanced display options. Talk about weird...

Now, to sync that crazy system clock and make mouse double-click working...
