Hello all MorphOS users and developers (at least all of the ones who read this website).

I have been requested to give a MorphOS3.x presentation at the 2013 AmiWest Show in Sacramento, California, USA in October. I declined the request and told them that I was even considering not renting a display table for MorphOS, and attending as a spectator only this year, but that I would attempt to find a replacement to both display MorphOS3.x system(s) at the show, and someone to give a short, or long presentation of what MorphOS is, how it works, and what the latest developments are that have been completed in the most recent release of MorphOS3.2.

I know that most people reading this site live outside the USA, so it is not feasible for you to travel to California to attend the AmiWest Show, but there are more and more MorphOS users within the USA, and I am hoping that one of you will step up and take over this responsibility that I have placed upon myself the past 5 or so years.

Interest in MorphOS at each AmiWest Show has grown greatly over the last few years and the organizers of the show are keen to keep a MorphOS presence at the show (even though most of the organizers are avid AmigaOS4.x users). They have always shown me the greatest courtesy and offered help when ever I have asked for any. It would be a shame if no one would volunteer to replace me for this year's show.

My reasons for wanting to step aside and have someone else take over representing MorphOS3.x at this year's AmiWest Show are mostly health related, as my back condition continues to deteriorate and it makes it more difficult to pack up and move around several computer systems to prepare for each show, in addition to the driving almost 8 hours to the show and then another 8 hours back home after the show.

I have even considered not attending the show at all, but since it is such a great chance to meet with and talk to other Amiga addicts like myself, I will most probably be there again this year, but hopefully only as a participant, and not as a display person, or a presenter (I suck at preparing presentations).

If any of you are interested in representing MorphOS at the 2013 AmiWest Show (in an unofficial capacity, unless one or more of the MorphOS Dev. Team members can come), please contact me, or one of the AmiWest organizers ASAP to make arrangements for the table rental and/or schedule a presentation time and subject matter.

I really hope one of you reading this can, and will take this opportunity. It is a really fun show to attend.

Edit: If any of you accept this opportunity, I will offer to help as much as I can.

Perhaps a bounty could be started to pay for the travel and hotel expenses for member of the MorphOS Team to give a presentation?

No sense in setting up a bounty for travel expenses, unless/until we find a MorphOS Dev Team member, or MorphOS user willing to attend the 2013 AmiWest Show and take over the effort of displaying and/or presenting MorphOS to the attendees at the show.

Can the MorphOS Dev. Team member who moved to Canada recently (within the last year) please speak up and let us know if you are even slightly interested in attending the 2013 AmiWest Show, or if it is not possible for you to attend due to your work or private schedule. If we knew who this person was, and if they are interested in attending the show, but can't because of monetary constraints, then we could determine if the rest of us are willing to donate toward the travel and hotel expenses.

If none of the MorphOS Dev. Team members want to attend, or can attend, I am still hoping that at least one MorphOS user will step forward and decide to attend the show to represent MorphOS. Now that we have 3.2 running on G5 systems, it would be a shame to not have it displayed during the 2013 AmiWest Show. That, plus the working wireless CardBus NIC's for the G4 PowerBook's are two new developments that should generate a good deal of interest at the show.

    @AmigaDave,

    Whatever the "morph team" does...

I want to thank you personally!
If you had not come to AmiWest and demo'ed Morph,

I would not even have known it existed.

Now, I have a mac g4 running both osX and Morph...
had lots of issues with the hardware. First, the power supply died, then I needed to get a radeon card, then the cd failed.
Sigh, old hardware, just like my 4000 with it's caps issue.

For the record, I have now set up several other Sacramento classic users with mac/morph machines.

You did and do have an inpact
    !

What about Magnetic or Acill - IIRC in the earlier years of MorphOS they did something like that already.

    @sacc-user,

Thanks, it is nice to be appreciated, and I was always made very welcome by all of the organizers and other attendee's at each AmiWest Show I have been to and displayed MorphOS at over the last 5 or 6 years.

Hopefully, someone else will step forward to continue this work, so AmiWest will not revert to an AmigaOS4.x only show.

Magnetic shows his location as either Los Angeles, Calif., or New York, New York, so I don't know where he is currently residing. If it is Los Angeles, then he is closer to Sacramento than I am, living in Big Bear Lake, Calif.

Acill has apparently moved to Arizona, so he is probably a little further away from Sacramento, Calif. than I am, but still a doable drive, if you use those 5 hour Energy drinks to keep you awake.

There are so many flights to Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, & San Francisco to choose from via Southwest Airlines, and if purchased far enough in advance, can be bought for less than $100 each way from Los Angeles, it makes the trip very easy and not very expensive. I am guessing that there are also several cheap flights from the Phoenix, Arizona area to those same 4 airports that are close to the AmiWest Show, to make it easy to get there for Acill as well.

I don't mean to put either of those guys on the spot, but they are certainly good candidates to represent MorphOS at the 2013 AmiWest Show, if they are interested in doing so.

Ive done it twice and the last time Me and the other member doing it were treated so poorly I swore I would never come back. Granted I helped to sell several Pegasos II boards and got a lot of interest, but we were forced to pay full retailer price for our table, got put in the far back of the room away from everyone else and didnt get our turn to speak up to the last minute of the show and most people were gone by then.

I work at Intel in Chandler, Az. now and its a long trip for me to go for a day. I am on shift and mine is Sunday - Tuesday 6-6 so it makes near impossible to get out there and back in time. I'd love to go, but just dont see it happening and Im still a bit bitter over the last one I did.

That and money is super tight since I took a huge pay cut leaving the military and starting over with a new career.

I can't speak for what happened to you, as it was before I started attending the AmiWest Shows over the last 6 or 7 years, and displaying MorphOS for the past 5 years. Everyone pays the same for their table, unless they are actually paying a higher donation to sponsor the show, AFAIK. Choosing the location of where my table's have been has never been a problem either, and they ask me when I want to present MorphOS and give me several available time slots to choose from on either day. Perhaps the year that you represented MorphOS at the AmiWest Show you were one of the last to sign up and all the other presentation time slots were already taken, or perhaps it was a genuine slight toward MorphOS by the organizers, because the conflict between AmigaOS4.x users and MorphOS users was still fresh and active, I don't know. All I know is that they have gone out of their way to be courteous and kind to me at each of my visits, and I have never had any kind of trouble at any of the AmiWest Shows.

If money is the primary problem stopping you from attending, we might be able to solve that with donations for travel and hotel expenses from other MorphOS users who wish to have MorphOS represented at this show. I would be happy to help make sure you got a good table location and even help with setting up a convenient time for you to do a presentation on Saturday, plus I could pick you up and drop you off at the airport, so you would not have to spend any money for cab fares. If you flew from Arizona to Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, or San Francisco (SF being the worst choice), I could even bring my MorphOS computers to the show for you to set up and display on, so you would not need to bring much equipment with you. The organizers often offer to loan LCD's, keyboards, mice and other computer equipment to people who are flying in to the show, so that they do not need to haul all of that equipment with them on the plane and risk damage by baggage handlers.

If you want to attend and represent MorphOS users at the show, we can probably make it happen, but need to start on it soon, so we can get the lowest price on airfare. If you are still too bitter, or skeptical about the way you were treated, or think you will be treated, I understand that this idea may not be the best for you. Maybe Thomas can come, as we have not heard from him.

In talking at the last meeting, a couple of us were trying to set a G5 for dual booting mac/morph.

BTW, I was the only one who had downloaded 3.2... due to this
We started discussing what support we could turn to (as we needed help)
The only resource I could think of at the time was you at AmiWest or this site.

Maybe one issue with the ease of acceptance of morphOS here is the lack of support?

It also seems that when we talk about morphos machines (hardware choices)
we miss items due to our lack of knowledge. Like my mistake with the nvidia card in my machine.

Maybe the "morphteam" could present on these support issues?

I could do it if I got help with airfare and hotel and the table. Getting equipment would be great so I wouldnt have to lug my G4 tower all the way, but not having my setup would be a pain. I could pack just the tower if I had someone to lend me a LCD monitor to use. Getting a mouse and keyboard would be simple too.

I would have to come up early Friday and leave Saturday evening at the latest. I can not afford to take a holiday because I am using them for Christmas in San Jose.

Please get me the days I'll have to attend and I will talk it over with my wife. I cant make any promises, but I am sure I can swing it this year and have her agree if Im not spending a lot of money to do it. This first year out of the Navy has been a real eye opener for me.

You do of course understand that for some folks,a web site is not enough.
Not to mention that one must know about any web site.

Support is more then a link. I know! When I found the papasaur site and after dl'ing his excellent collecton....IT didn't work.
I had his and amigadave personal help or I would have given up.

Just pointing out info may be okay for the devs, but users are many different levels of readiness.

Completely agree, new users range from ex-MorphOS users (1.x) through ex-Amiga users, through to those who've never tried anything Amiga before.

Identifying obstacles and helping people over them smoothly is a difficult one to manage, and there's always room for improvement. If you could help identify specific areas in which more guidance can be useful, that would be awesome.

There's a specific thread for such suggestions here.

Acill is considering attending the show, but only if we can help him with the travel and hotel costs, which we are determining now.

How many members here would be willing to donate a small amount to help with such an effort?

I am about a 3 hour drive from Sacramento. No promises but I will think on presenting MorphOS from such a side that I too was once skeptical about MorphOS 10 years ago, but glad I tried it in 2010.. Ill keep posted if I decide to do something.

I know how it is to not be working and have limited income, I have not worked in over 6 years.

    @Doffo,

It would be great if you can make it to the 2013 AmiWest Show and do a presentation for everyone there. Even if Aciil can manage to come to the show, the more MorphOS3.2 users we have there, the better it will be. You need to decide if you can come as soon as possible, if you plan on doing a presentation, before all the presentation time slots are full.

If you are sure you can attend, then please contact Brian, or Bill, at the SACC group to arrange a presentation time for MorphOS. They very much wish to have someone do a MorphOS3.x presentation during the show.

Again I will ask if anyone else here on this forum is willing to help Aciil with his travel and hotel costs to attend the 2013 AmiWest Show. He appears to be asking for time off from his job, so he can stay both Saturday and Sunday of the show, instead of having to leave Sunday afternoon to return home. I can only help him a little, as all my spare money is going to my college age Son, for tuition, food, and his car, so he can continue working and going to school. Just had to replace his timing belt and automatic transmission this last month at a cost of almost $3,000 of unexpected additional expenses.

Hope to see several MorphOS users at this year's AmiWest Show.

Looks like Aciil can't make it to AmiWest this year, so I hope Doffo can come (and anyone else who is willing to help out with the MorphOS table and presentation).
