Every attempt to upgrade past err.. Lenny (5?) has left me with an pretty much unusable system for me.
I have Squeeze (Debian 6) installed on my Peg2 (last generation shiped with last firmware version, in case that matters).
When I installed it (two years ago maybe?), I remember using the standard Debian installer and I had to hack nothing... It just worked, as far as Linux works (i.e. it's uber slow when you are used to MorphOS, there are endianess issues with X and all the other usual crap)...
I never tried to dist-upgrade it, though.
The only real blocking issue I remember is Linux's RDB support is buggy and does not handle partitions above the 2TB limit.
