    Hey,

On my mac g5 2.3ghz I finally got mplayer to play a bluray quality video in .mkv format at full speed.
    My desktop was 1920x1080x24bit
I had to make a new screen of 1920x1080x16bit.
It played almost perfectly but not quite so i checked to use frame skipping and it is right on the money now.
I really don't see any loss of quality from using 16bit.
One more reason you can go MOS.

Quite. How about got 1080p quality video working (and not really even that).
Blu-ray is so chock full of proprietary BS and protection that you're not likely to see these under MorphOS anytime soon.
And frankly, I'm satisfied with DVDs.

    Picky, Picky people.
You didnt REALLY think I stuck a bluray player in a Mac and got MOS to read it did you?
After all the threads on how that is not happening?
Well, I have not seen anyone else yet that has been able to play 1080p in mplayer.

This is what inexperienced users might conclude.

Not everybody might have read them, especially not new users.

You don't have to make a specific 16 bits screenmode, it doesn't make ANY difference which screen depth you use there, since this is displayed in an overlay output. As for speed, you'd gain a lot more by disabling loopfilter (-lavdopts=skiploopfilter=all.

I have tried the loopfilter before on a quicksilver to no avail.
Lowering from 24bit to 16bit finally did the trick.
    Worked for me.

The screen is not used by MPlayer.
The video is displayed in an overlay window.

Which codec is the best for playback with G5? MP4 seems to be a little heavy. FLV seems quite smooth. AVI too. Anyone who knows?

MP4, FLV and AVI are container formats, not codecs.

Video overlay can not be used for source resolutions which are 1920 pixels wide for various Radeon cards. So 16bit modes might indeed have some impact then if MPlayer falls back to std graphics rendering mode. I am not sure right now if MPlayer does automatically rescale the output in this case to fit the hardware requirements for overlay.

Well, which gfx card do you have? The 9600 and 9800 usually allow 1920 widths (mac mini 9200 and powerbook 9700 also do).

I remember a 1536 pixels wide limit with a cheap radeon 9250, though.

SYS:Utilities/GraphicsBoards would be the tool of choice I'd say.

    Does mplayer multitask?
I noticed while it was running fron the shell that it kept complaining that it was compiled without threading capability or something like that.

Yes, of course it does. You can see the screenbar clock work while running MPlayer in a window, can't you?

    > it kept complaining that it was compiled without threading capability or something like that.

Multitasking doesn't require threading. Those are two different concepts. In a nutshell, (multi-)threading is real parallelism whereas multitasking is faked parallelism.

It's about ffmpeg multithreading support, which i didn't bother implementing since it only makes sense on multiple core systems. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it being disabled and it doesn't affect performances in any way on our systems.

I've got roughly the same video card and it can display full hd with overlay. But i guess there might be several variants.

Anyway, if you want to have an idea how it would behave on a good card, add -vf crop=0:0:1536:1080 to the command line or use the crop option in video menu.
If you want to see the picture completely, you can also use the scale filter instead : -vf scale=width:height or scale option in video menu. This one will seriously impact performance, of course, since rescaling will be done by cpu.

    @Fab

What do you recommend to get the smoothest possible playback on a G5?

I read that you got full 1080p with only 35% CPU usage. I can't watch 1080 at all (lag) and 720p eats up up to 60% of my CPU.

This is with youtube films downloaded as mp4 on my G5 2,7 GHz with 9600XT 128 meg.

I just don't know where I'm doing it wrong, but I assume that I do :-P

And this wasn't with H264 obviously.

    This is H264 then.

Look for a switch to turn off overlay and lower your color depth.
    Maybe that will work.
