Powerbook 5.6: Fullscreen only shows 1/4 of the screen

Like the title says. I have tried several fullscreen games like Birdieshoot, Candy Crisis and Sqrxz 3 and they all shows the full game alright, but only on the top left of the screen. The rest 3/4 are just black.

Is this fixable or at least a known bug?

This is a known issue. See:

People are not as good as explaining their grievences on the title screen as I would wish :-P

Does these games need 3D drivers? Even BirdieShoot?

Well, good things it's being fixed :-)

It has nothing to do with 3D. I was referring to the last paragraph of the topmost posting (#17). I thought reading the posting would give away which part of it was connected with your issue.

Terribly sorry. I was busy with other things so all I saw was "lacking 3D support". I see what the problem is now.

There are several things on that list that I've noticed (like no external screen working). There really is a lot that needs to be fixed :-) Good thing it's still nevertheless quite a cute laptop :-D

I remember reading that it does work, but only in mirror mode for now.

True, that's what I meant. But it's hardly useful for me.

It seems that the screen thing wasn't solved with 3.2. There's still only one screen mode available for PB. So:

1, is this something the developers intend to tackle?
2, or can I change the games so they show in windowed mode instead? Birdieshoot for example.

Support for scaled resolutions and external displays is something we would like to have, but we cannot promise this will be part of 3.3 or 3.4 releases.

That's a real shame. What is the reason it's hard to implement? I mean, considering that it works on other models with similar gfx cards.

Is mirror mode something the user is supposed to be able to turn on somehow? I couldn't get my powerbook (5,6) to produce any external display. Looking forward to my mac mini turning up. :)
PPC assembly ain't so bad... ;)

Similar != the same. You can't just throw a different screen resolution at the LCD panel, you have to scale the picture instead. And proper DVI out support requires dual-head support which we do not have.

I see. I guess that explain the external screen issue. But what about not being able to change internal screen size?

Sorry, but I don't really understand then. Is it the same problem with VGA, that I use?

My Mini can handle a wide variety of screen sizes (VGA) but PB only one. I'm sorry for being stupid, but I'm curious of why.

Like I said, the LCD panel in PowerBook only supports *one* resolution. To get lower resolutions, you have to upscale them to the native resolution on the panel. This is totally different than with external displays where you can just change the frequencies, etc of the signal.

So, anyone got an answer for my second question?

I'm still hoping that someone have an idea of how to change game or programs full screen mode into a window mode. That would solve a lot of gaming issues for me :-)

If games dont support it then it is not possible. SDL games always support it but this is different thing.
    1 + 1 = 3 with very large values of 1

After Installation of MOS 3.2, the Quake3 started to work... but also only 1/4 of the screen, this game supports higher resolution, so it shouldn't be a problem... but one can't set it up when it's not visible... :)

That's a real bummer. Because it looks awful as it is. Would it be possible to do some kind of hack?

One more question; is it at least theoretical possible to force the screen to the center and have the unused space blacked out (some games shows another color than black)? I can live with smaller screen size under such conditions :-P
