    hi all.
just installed mos 3.1 on my powerbook g4, and try as i might i can't switch off the system! i had to remove the battery in the end... not good for the machine i bet. any ways i take it that there is a menu item at the top of the screen, where it says 'ambient', and the small butterfly logo beside it, do you just place the mouse pointer on this bar, which should bring up the menu items??? am i missing something completely, or does anyone think my install has gone bad in some way... cause try as i might i can't switch it off. everything alse is working fine, web browser etc...
    cheers Lee

Your PB should power-down by holding the power-button for a few seconds (a short tap will just issue a reset).

MorphOS-menus are enabled by right-mouse button with the trackpad you would need to place 2 finger on the pad while clicking to get that effect.

    hi kronos.
just trying the two finger on the trackpad thing now but it doesn't seem to be working, and as for holding the power button down for a few seconds, i tried that for a lot of seconds, and all it did was power the machine back up again with a corrupted screen!!!! heeelllllp please...

You can get the shutdown requester by hitting command-q combination from keyboard when you're in Ambient. Then enter to shutdown or select by mouse.

Another option is to write "shutdown" in shell or into "Execute Command..." window (command-e).

Or keep right alt+command key pressed to get the menus visible, that simulates right mouse button too.

And check your system settings for rmb emulation for touchpad and select the best method for you. Or if you're having too much problems getting right mouse button emulated, plug in normal USB mouse and try to browse system settings with that.

One rather obvious solution no-one mentioned yet: Get an USB mouse / trackball with at least 2 buttons. It will be way more comfortable to use both buttons that way.

Regarding shutdown with the power button, the machine SHOULD shut down when you hold it down long enough. Yes, the system reboots when you press it, and at least on my system, I have to hold it down until 3 seconds after the boot sound, then the computer will shut down.

Sounds like you need to configure your trackpad. If RMB is posing a problem, you can go to sys:prefs/preferences to bring up the preferences panel. There's an entry on the bottom line for 'trackpad' - click this. You can enable two-finger taps for the right mouse button from there.

Once RMB is available you can choose Ambient>Shutdown from the desktop to switch off/reboot.

Alternatively, Carsten Sieger has written 'shutdowntool' as a screenbar module, which is available here. This gives you an icon on the status bar which - when clicked - shuts down the computer (You can also configure a shutdown script to run if so desired).

You can install this by copying the (uncompressed) file to sys:classes/screenbar. It will then need activating before it will appear in the status bar (RIGHT click on the Ambient depth gadget in the status bar - top right of the screen - to configure screenbar modules).

    Regards

    Rich

EDIT: Corrected "Click on Ambient depth gadget" to "RIGHT click on Ambient depth gadget."
