Cannot install MorphOS 3.1 on Powerbook G4 5,8

Just got an good deal on a fully-loaded PB G4 A1138. The machine boots OS X fine and without any issues, but when I try to install MorphOS I run into one of two problems.

First issue is that sometimes MorphOS locks up in the middle of the install. When this happens, I often can't reboot the machine at all, nor can I eject the disk for a normal boot.

Second issue is that when I get to the point where I'm actually ready to install MorphOS -- the actual install step after having done all the partitioning and formatting -- it fails with the message "Disk is write protected."

I suspect that the first issue /may be/ a problem with the optical drive. it only appears to occur when I'm booting off of a disk, but it also seems to interfere with a reboot. I can neither boot the system or eject the disk after it happens and usually have to wait a while before I can boot again. It doesn't seem to occur when I'm booting of the hard disk.

Any and all clues greatly appreciated.

If you suspect it is the optical drive you can try booting from a USB pendrive:

    1 + 1 = 3 with very large values of 1

Thanks, itix, I /think/ that solved one of my problems. I'm not sure, though as I've had a couple of lock-up since. I'm just not certain if it's related to the earlier lock-ups.

I solved my other problem. I was getting the write-protected error because, apparently, the SFS partition needed to be made bootable. The instructions I was following wasn't clear on that. All resolved now, and I'm typing this from my Powerbabe g4 -- my new nick for my MorphOS based system. ;)
