    Anyone else seen this: http://youtu.be/SzWAvFZQ2ts

    Saw it mentioned on AW.net

Not that MorphOS2.7 could be run using it, but maybe the MorphOS Dev. Team could use it for moving forward with their development work while running faster PC computers.

All the users that want to move to Intel or ARM should be happy if a PPC can be emulated. Maybe a special version of MorphOS just for them to run on their PC's can somehow be made and sold to them. :-)

    Emulates a G4 @ 2.15GHz.

I did not watch the whole video, so maybe it is a hoax, but it looks real.

No it does not. The number returned by the "about this mac" box has little to do with the actual performance.

I thought progress on PearPC had stopped years ago so I was surprised to find out just now that there was another release last year. It'd be interesting if it ever got integrated into WinUAE...
PPC assembly ain't so bad... ;)

PearPC has been emulating PPC on x86 and running MacOSX/PPC for 8 years now. So I don't know why someone should even consider that it was a hoax. There are many videos on Youtube showing it running.

I think it does. Only at 10% speed or something :-P

Some system info program for MacOS8 considered my 060/50MHz to be 14 (or was it 1.4) GHz. I never really trusted that 100% :-)

IF you have a top of the line I7 cpu and pearpc uses these ... I guess it will be very useable. But why when MacOSx does run native on x86 ? And if you want to use this for MorphOS ... I guess you can't make use of the current drivers for graphics or does it emulate a Radeon also ? Or how does it work ?

Is it like WinXp emulation within WIn7 ? Very nice for apllications but for older games it's useless because it doesn't make use or emulates 3D hardware.

I believe that any middle-end (or faster) PowerPC mac will be way faster. And also cost <50 euros (assuming you are fine with lower end PowerMac)

No. As far as I know, those "compatibility mode" (whatever) applications will use the CPU natively. A bit like running 68k MacOS on classic amiga.

Why people are so negative?. Long time ago i installed panther on my amd athlon 3000+ emulating a ppc under pearpc. It wasn't a lightspeed travel, but certainly also wasn't that bad. With machines on cpus like dual or quad core, it would be very usable. And don't forget that mac os x is a heavy os, so lighter oses would run faster definitely.

Sheepshaver's PPC emulation is twice faster (although lacks MMU IIRC)

Extra cores won't help since all emulation runs in a single thread.

Dolphin has been improved... i offered to take the costs for a mos port to it..
I had to accept that Team MorphOS doesn't wan't it.
If someone is impressed by PearPC on modern HW, he should try Dolphin on modern HW.
New build has improved MMU and FPU emulation.

If Team MorphOS fears piracy.. i have and had an solution to control on which system MOS can be installed and on what not.
No i am not talking about a MAC address.

I can't even begin to figure out how to install that package.

And since PPC emulation is going to be slower then native hardware, why would I want to use it?

I just compared a result from supposed "G4 @ 2.25 GHz" against PowerBook G4 1.67GHz. When executing AltiVec benchmark the emulated system is equal to 114 MHz G4.

Lets check again in 5 years or so...

PearPC became obsolete, when Apple stepped over to x86 and showed by that occasion, that their emulation, Rosetta, is very much faster. That does not mean, that PearPC is no good idea for us. Not now, but it is, as far as I know, open source. (In opposite to Rosetta.) So it can be a solution to migrate (in a more or less distant future, of course) to a more up to date platform. Remember the poor start of UAE, back in time the "U" was for "unusable", later for "Unix", and now for "ubiquitous".

A bit off topic maybe, but I use the free virtualbox software to run xp under win7, and old games work quite well. Including some 3D games, like Return to Caste Wolfenstein.

Since the speed is not true, and I did not know that, my entire post should be ignored.

PearPC is not interesting for MacOSX, but if the speed were ever improved (which is not likely, unless the people working on it have some reason other than MacOSX for wanting to emulate a PPC computer on an x86 platform), like Piru says, maybe in another 5 years, then it could have been useful for MorphOS, but that speed increase would need to be now, not 5 years from now.

I did not post the information here for anything to do with MacOSX, only if it could be useful for MorphOS, which it is not, at the current speed that it can really run at.

I did not know that the "About this Mac" could be so far off and is basically useless for really knowing what speed the Mac system is running at.
