    Check this out:
    http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

Maybe we can get this to MorphOS? That would be great. Either a port or give the developers a MorphOS machine so they can port it? How much effort would it take to port LibreOffice to MorphOS?

    Regards,

LibreOffice would be no easier to port then OpenOffice and offers the same obstacles.

    @Jim

Isn't LibreOffice the continuation of the (now dead) OpenOffice anyway?

My understanding was that the (project head? Owner?) of OpenOffice had got into a sulk and taken his ball home with him, and everyone else had carried on development as 'LibreOffice' instead.

    EDIT:

    From LibreOffice FAQ:

Q: Why are you calling yourselves "The Document Foundation"?

A: For ten years we have used the same name - "OpenOffice.org" - for both the Community and the software. We've decided it removes ambiguity to have a different name for the two, so the Community is now "The Document Foundation", and the software "LibreOffice". Note: there are other examples of this usage in the free software community - e.g. the Mozilla Foundation with the Firefox browser.

Q: And why are you calling the software "LibreOffice" instead of "OpenOffice.org"?

A: The OpenOffice.org trademark is owned by Oracle Corporation. Our hope is that Oracle will donate this to the Foundation, along with the other assets it holds in trust for the Community, in due course, once legal etc issues are resolved. However, we need to continue work in the meantime - hence "LibreOffice" ("liberty office", "freedom office").

    Exactly,
And I have the current version.
Its OK, but not on par with Word.

My impression is that MS Office intentionally screws up ODF-saved files a bit so that there are still little annyoing incompatibilities here and there. We wouldn't want to make this bloatware become obsolete, would we?

I haven't figured out which package is more at fault, but BOTH have screwed up for me when importing or exporting files to non-native formats.

Word processor are not that complicated. Why can't we find the source code to something the doesn't require crap like Java (or other bloated crap)?

I'd settle for the functionality I had ten years ago
(in Word, Word Perfect, even Ami Pro).

    I agree Jim!

My choice would be for WordPerfect. I always liked it, and still prefer it over Word. I can not stand the automatic formatting in Word that was always fighting what I wanted to do. (Of course, WordPerfect is not Open Source, so we need to find something that is free to port and simpler, so it won't take 3 years to complete a port to MorphOS)

Where I used to work, we used WordPerfect for many years, until a new IT director was hired and forced everyone in the whole system to switch to Word. It cost us tons of productivity (many thousands of man/hours, since we had approx. 400 employees that were used to using WordPerfect, not Word) for many months, if not years and was completely senseless, since WordPerfect had very good ability to export to the most current Word file format at that time.

I still own the original WordPerfect4.1 for Amiga 68k with a complete manual. I switched to SoftWood's Final Copy 1 & 2 and then Final Writer after WordPerfect was no longer supported on the Amiga. Probably bought every product SoftWood sold for the Amiga. At least all of their productivity software products.

A simple wordprocessor, similar to Final Writer, or any of the WordPerfect versions, after they moved from DOS to Windows with a WYSIWYG interface, would be fine with me. For writing documents, all I want are a few formatting tools, good font selection & rendering, plus great printing. The ability to import modern file formats is a must for most people, along with being able to include graphics with text.

Still trying to get a keyfile for my free copy of PageStream that I won at the 2009 AmiWest Show. I have given up several times only to have people tell me that all I have to do is contact the current developers, but even after setting up an account at their website and registering and pleading for help, I am still without a keyfile, or the ability to run PageStream's last Amiga version that I want to use on MorphOS2.7.

I know what you mean about Word David.
I've frequently found myself asking the monitor "Why are you doing that?".
Word seems to want to make formatting changes based on someone else's decisions (rather then my own).

There ought to be something out there that can be ported.
Word processing hasn't significantly improved in over 10 years.

The code for such a program does not to be a large or complicated as Open Office.

BTW - I still have a old copy of WordPerfect, too.

Java crap?. Maybe could be easier to achieve trying directly in assembler or basic, as these systems are less "bloated".

yesterday I was looking at Final Writer 97 ... And I was thinking that the letters I typed back then looked the same as the letters I type today at work with the latest Microsoft Office. It's amazing how companies always seem to succeed in making you think you need the latest version of their software while the result is the same as 15 years ago ...

Openoffice not dead anymore. Have not Apache taken it over or something.

    Libre office started ages ago.

Yes, that's why it's called Apache OpenOffice in the press release I linked to.

    > Libre office started ages ago.

If you call September 2010 "ages ago", then yes.

By ages was trying to point out that libre office didnt start when open office stopped. ITs more of a branch than a continuation

Agreed. However, many people (me included) regarded LibreOffice as continuation of OpenOffice for the 1.25 years that went without any OpenOffice release. The only reason I don't view LibreOffice as continuation of OpenOffice anymore is the recent Apache OpenOffice release. Without that, LibreOffice would still be the "new OpenOffice" for me, despite the fact that LibreOffice started before OpenOffice temporarily stopped.
