And to my surprise judging by the last linked document it seems like IBM is considering VMX/AltiVec capability for future PPC4xx cores:

"Microarchitecture support for future extensions such as VMX" (page 5)
"internal capped interface for FPU and VMX support" (page 12)


Edit: Just found an older (October 2009) document already mentioning VMX in a PPC4xx context:

"support for future VMX integration with asynchronous issue & execution interface" (page 29)
