    Hey guys,

I've just installed MorphOS 2.4 on my Mac Mini G4 and was wondering where too from here?

I would like to do some development, etc.. but not sure where to start? is there a wiki or anything around? Or should I just scour the forums to find a good place to start? :)

Try clicking on the Library heading at the top of the MorphZone webpage. It is a work in progress, but it has a few articles that might help you get started.

Other than that, read the forums, do searches for any questions you might have and then if you still can't find the answers you need, write a clear question on the forums and it will get answered. It is appreciated though if you make some effort to first find the answers in the many postings that have been made before you on the forums and elsewhere, as it gets tiring for the experienced users and developers to continually answer the same questions over and over again.

Welcome to MorphZone and the greatest Amiga (like) OS on the planet!

This depends on whether you are familiar with Amiga (or, if you were and you still remember it). I will assume you are not (or don't remember much like me...)

Haven't tried any dev tools yeat but for a basic start of using it I absolutely recommend reading these 2 first from the Library here:
    http://wiki.morphos-user.com/index.php/Fundamentals_of_MorphOS
    http://wiki.morphos-user.com/index.php/Dictionary_of_Terms

Then, maybe skim over some Pegasos Books, especially Volume 3 (outdated but...)
    http://www.efika.org/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=44

Some beginning Amiga concepts are explained well here:
    http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&sl=fr&tl=en&u=http://obligement.free.fr/documents/ami_beg.txt&rurl=translate.google.fr&usg=ALkJrhgWIKq9cjQ51-Icl_pCvkJItpDF_Q

For any shell work, start first with Amiga DOS commands which are explained here:

Thanks for the responses, I still have my Amiga 1200 lying around, just haven't used it in a long time. I'll read up on the library and take it from there. Thanks for all the help! :)

I forgot... Even better, install the online help which is very similar to the "man" command in UNIX, I find it incredibly helpful and it was also very easy to install:

    I'd suggest installing this:

    http://www.meta-morphos.org/download/Pack_Ultimate_151.lha

It is highly recommended. It will get you quite a few apps without a lot of fuss looking around for this and that...

Also, I've started a wiki for MorphOS dev in an attempt to collect info in one place since I am new to developing for MorphOS as well. Feel free to join and contribute.

I would also highly recommend installing handlers for common MIME types (and much more):
    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/attachmanager.php?post_id=70700

All of a sudden the system is much more streamlined...

Utilitibase.com is good to post questions in any AmigaOS/MorphOS related programming subjects.

    Amiga Developer Site
http://amiga.sourceforge.net/amigadevhelp/ is worth to dig through.

I miss draggable screens... and do you? I know I'm in a minority unfortunately.

    Whoa!!!

This script just did a number on my MorphOS 2.4 system! I wouldn't just run it willy-nilly.

After it was finished (and I rebooted), nothing worked the way it was before. All my context menus had entries for programs I don't even have installed. The 'filetypespath' file was FILLED with out-of-date paths -- often noted as Default MOS paths -- and it took forever to point them in the right direction!

The RAM disk icon was changed to a regular disk icon and I had to search here for tips on how to get it back (and to accept the snapshotting I'd done previously).

Now my question is: How do I edit the context menus? For example, right-clicking a .jpg gives me options for Multiview, MysticView, PicShow, ShowGirls, ShowGirls (Browser), and FXPaint. And double-clicking now sends it to ShowGirls instead of Multiview. I really just want a couple of options (ShowGirls, FXPaint) and double-click should be Multiview for speed.

Similarly, right-clicking on a text file give me options for MultiView, More, MorphED, CygnusED and GoldED -- the latter three I don't even have installed! I NEED to have my context menus USABLE!

Help me, please. And beware this script!

Yeah, someone should have warned you .....

Open Prefs / Ambient from menu.
    Go to "filetypes".
    Select "Images"

You should now see a list of all apps configured for images.

Yes, it's a bit crude but manageable.

    Edit the paths here:

echo "If necessary then adjusting Paths for installed applications in"
    echo "WBStartup/FileTypesPath with a Texteditor!"

The menus you can remove them or reconfigure them in the MIME configuration window of Ambient.

The script is very low-level, a GUI installer with lots of switches would be needed to make it more usable.

For me it was great since my system is not configured at all and this was a great starting point. Sorry if it messed up you but I think you can easily recover.

The script also saves the backup of the previous configuration, it tells you that after the installation. Look into the install script for the location (I am not with my MorphOS machine, I would look for you). So you can revert back any time if you prefer!

Yes, I edited the 'filetypespath' file to accurately reflect the proper locations of my applications. I commented out those that I don't have installed. So now when I use the context menu to 'Open in ShowGirls' it actually does that! That's good. Now I want to get rid of the context menu items I don't need or want.

The backup file the script created was nothing more than two directories, one empty (icons) and one with four changes I'd made to MIME type on my own in the video category. I can't see how copying these back will restore anything, except those four MIME types.

Ultimately I don't mind what the script did since I was able to fix the RAM disk icon problem and adjust the paths. I think it should be used with great caution clean installs AND with the caveat that lots of software will need to be installed afterward to make use of all the changes.

But what I really need to do (and I would have like to know this even before running the script) is how to edit context menus. I've looked all over MIME configuration in Ambient Settings and can't really find where to make the changes.

    Ok, Ok, Ok...

I was confused because when I would click on a MIME type to edit it, it would say "Inherited..." and I wasn't able to edit the entry. Inherited from what, I thought. Then I figured it out: The top entry had all the context menu items for each particular MIME type. Now I get it.

    Thanks,

    TJH

Yes, sorry, forgot to mention the "inherited". I find that concept very useful, saves lots of redundant work.

MorphOS maybe should say "inherited from X" where X is the root -- it would be more obvious...
