    Hello everyone,

I've just bought myself a mac mini from Ruud :-) and over the last few days I've been messing about with the system and found I like morphos. I have afew questions, I did have a look in the FAQ section of the site but theres nothing in there!

    1) I'm planning on buying a keyfile, but I read that the keyfile is hardware locked. How does this affect upgrading the memory and hdd? can I simply plugin the new hdd and a fresh install of MOS and use my keyfile?

    2) I'm sure I read somewhere that if my mac mini breaks and I need to buy a replacement I will also need to buy a new MOS licence?

    3) I've notice that if I active the module/volume control this has no affect in controlling the volume! is this the same for all mac mini's or am I missing something?

    1) The keyfile is bound to the MAC address of the computer (that is the physical network address). Upgrading RAM, changing/adding drives, even replacing the cpu for fixing, doesn't affect the key. But remember to store a backup copy of the key at a safe place (thoughyou can get a new key from teh team when required).
    2) If the mini breaks and you can somehow prove it is broken you should get a free key for a replacement maschine. But I guess details will have to be worked out by the steam still.
    3) Volume control of the mini currently does not work, because the audio is no AC97 and this issue is not yet resolved for the codec used by Apple.

    welcome!

    Good answers Zylesea.

Let me restate what he said about getting a replacement keyfile if your computer dies and you cannot get it fixed, or decide not to spend the money to get it fixed. The MOSTeam has said that you will be able to get a new keyfile for a replacement computer, after they have been satisfied that your original computer cannot be used again by yourself or someone else, with your old keyfile. Just how that would be proven would be up to the team and the person trying to get the replacement keyfile, and where the dead computer is located.

The only reason I am writing more about this topic than what Zylesea already wrote, is because there have been a couple of users that do not like the keyfile being tied to the hardware that have tried to confuse the replacement policy in the past. So, no one should use the excuse of how the keyfile is tied to the hardware as their reason not to register and purchase a MorphOS license.

Thank you for more insight AmigaDave

I've read afew posts about the hardware lock and price off morphos over the internet and they both don't bother me atall. I personally think it is a good idea to have the OS locked to hardware, as MOS is'nt going to get the sales off windows etc and the developers of MOS are'nt going to be making there millions!

And for the sake of what each developer is making out of the sale of a single MOS licence and with the final product being a high standard that it's almost replaced my need for bloated windows. It would be a shame that if the software was cracked, the interest and worth while of carrying on production of MOS would fall. So I'm all for the MOS team trying to reduce the chance's of someone cracking the software! I also liked the idea that the developers of hollywood did and that was to make each version persona,l so if it was shared then you know where it came from! tho not a bullet proof way, but what really is!

As for the price issue, as I said above for all the developer are making out of a single sale I think the price is good valve. Like all amigan's I've spent alot more on my 1200 to get it to be able to run games such as heretic II, nightlong but the price I'll pay for my mac mini and MOS licence is still alot less than buying another BPPC 240.

But there will always be people that will moan about anything and everything and it's best to let them have their rant and that will keep them happy.

The only concern which hopefully I wont need to find out is what is constituted as proof of broken hardware. unless you send your system off to one of the developer to be confirmed, how else could you prove its broken. As I said I hope I dont need to find out and im basically just thinking out loud :-)
