    Never used any Instant Messenger, and don't see any need for one...

    IRC and E-mail are already fairly enough for me... And work on most
    platforms too

    Used to think so aswell. But the fact is, people find ICQ (for example) to be a lot more easier to use than IRC. Not everybody can use IRC since day one, but learning how to use ICQ is a matter of an hour. I know, I have tought lots of people to use it (the same people would never touch IRC unless it connects it automaticly to predefined channels, with predefined server and predefined nickname.)

    ICQ is just as much security hole as is IRC, let alone MS messenger. Or browsing the net or using Outlook Express. If you start thinking this way in the end you'll be too afraid to cross the road when going to work. And what happens next, your kids die of hunger, wife leaves for a braver man and you'll end up home using computer 24/7 and ordering pizza on your doorsteps :-)
