Which WebCam to buy for Pegasos?

    Hi,

I am thinking of buying a webcam for my Pegasos. I know that there may not be so many utilities available (or are they?) for videoconferencing etc, but I want to give it a try...

I had some bad experiences in the past with webcams, so this time I want to buy a good Webcam like Philips or LogiTech. Both brands have models with CCD type sensors (Philips PCVC840K) rather than the cheap CMOS equipped cameras and deliver very good picture quality at high resolutions.

But, I fear that not every webcam is going to work with my Pegasos. Assuming that all the cameras are USB cameras now, there shouldn't be a problem recognizing the camera thanks to Poseidon USB, but how many video applications are there and which cameras are supported?

If you use a webcam and are happy with it, can you make some recommendations?

At least VHIstudio might support webcams (haven't tried) or at least it can grab images from TV tuner card and send the image to the internet as webcam...

    There's Lite version at Superbundle.

Don't be so sure about this.

My cheap $20 Walmart camera works great.

Very weird, even Linux doesn't like it, but MorphOS does.

VHI studio supports webcam with the STV680 chip.
There is a list of webcam brands and models here.

This list is for OS X not for MorphOS? Or am I wrong?

Maybe I was not clear enough.
In the list I posted you can find webcams with the STV680 chip.
They should be compatible with VHI studio.

Well, what we need is an enterprising community dealer to stock something that was tested on MorphOS ;-)

As I said on #morphos a long time ago now...the AIPTEK Pencam VGA (640x480) works perfectly. This is now discontinued but I bet there are huge stocks available at liquidation prices. I had a webcam up for quite some time but there are issues:

    1. VHI Studio (even 6.x) version webcam support leaks memory like a sieve.

    2. I adapted Bill Borsari's webcam REXX script to work with Pencam VHI driver (it uses ImageFX for scaling, date and time stamp plus AmFTP for upload)...this leaked far less memory...I think the culprit might have been the VHI driver here.

    Hi all,

The compatibility of webcams depends on their chipset that has to be supported with specific drivers. The only model that is supported is STV680 but I don't find this kind of webcams. So I bought 3 other webcams to program myself drivers : very funny but hard (due to my poor knowledge about USB and how a webcam works). So it is too early to announce what will work or not.
