Oh, you just fixed one culprit to the point you just don't notice the other.
Did put my G5 with the 256MG 9600 on 3.20 release and I always get a full Ambient with 1 monitor regardless of port.
But depending on which port I used when booting I either get a mirrored image or that empty Ambient screen if I move the plug on the running system.
