It worked, as I got only 8 MB after restart (and half of it was already eaten by Ambient).
As for MEM_SPARE2SYS - it seems it worked too!
Avail command fresh after restart and with the same screen depth (16 bit) gives me 979380040 total bytes without MEM_SPARE2SYS and 1004475016 bytes with MEM_SPARE2SYS enabled. So all the "spare" VMEM 24 MB went straight into main RAM pool!
