That is more or less the key question here. Does MorphOS on X5000 need a boot partition with the boot.img or does/can that recide on the System partition.

Did you do this?
I have - as far as I know - the latest version of uBoot. Since it can boot from the MorphOS install CD I would assume that it supports MorphOS install/boot. But good point!
