    @Georg

I think the beauty of JIT is that it actually compiles the code into native binaries, but using a binary stream as source instead of source code in text format. The end result depends on the quality of the JIT compiler of course. Here it seems like it's the normal 68k->PPC Trance first, making everything PPC, then a PPC->AMD64 compiler translating that to AMD64.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Well, if B.H. really wants MOS (for AMD64)!? ;)

I know, I'm a MOS rookie, but I've just registered it for a Mac Mini coz I like it a lot! And I would register an AMD64 right now, too! :)

    Thumbs up. +1

I fondly remember the good old days when suggesting this kind of development was ridiculed, because... "Why will anyone run MorphOS on a computer that can already run Windows?"

I suspect you are mixing up operating system names here. Even people who liked PowerPC did not make these type of statements about MorphOS as far as I remember.

It was good question twenty years ago and is still good today.
Why use MOS on x86 when everything may be done on exactly the same hardware one hundred time faster on win/lnx/osx?
MOS on x86 may be litte worse than win/lnx/osx maybe 20% but not magnitudes.
Otherwise it will be shit as AROS x86 is.

Actually I heard nearly the excact argument on Amiga34.

Having 1 new cheap and reliable machine that I can buy everywhere and be able to switch between windows, Linux and AmigaOS would be the coolest thing since ages!

I hope you did not tell him about Bochs or he might have to throw away his entire computer collection after coming home from the show.

Because it's not ready. Very few of us have working Classic PPC setups left.

Yup. And the ones left are usually riddled with stability issues. We are dealing with 25+ years old hardware after all. The 4000D I have to test with still has some ghosts haunting it after many rounds of trying to fix it up. But maybe I can see the light at the end of the tunnel by now. Fingers crossed.

(Additionally, my BVision seems to have died the very day before the show, therefore we couldn't present a working BlizzardPPC setup... So yeah... Having MorphOS PowerUP sometimes is fun, but it's mostly like having an old-timer car, which you spend 10 months fixing just so you can drive around the block three times in the summer, before it breaks again.)

    Hi all,

I don't post often, but I do check the Amiga/MorphOS news a few times a week. I just wanted to say that I would be very, very much up for MorphOS on AMD64!

But isn’t our entire PPC machine park heading in that same direction? Only matter of time... ;-)

    Go, go, go, AMD64! :-)

Very nice demo, impressive work !

I still think ARM would have been a better option, i can't figure out how the MorphOS team will deal with the hundreds of different configs, dozens of processors, gfx cards, motherboards etc..
Unless they give a very specific (and limited) hardware & brand list for MorphOS amd64 but with the risk again of having an outdated configuration within a few months, with hardware that will become hard to find as this market is moving so fast, not mentioning using a very generic PC without a personality. The MorphOS team simply doesn't have the ressources to cope with such a market.

I usually feel emotionally attached to my special machines, the old Amigas, the way i felt for the Pegasos, and even these old G4 Macs. I will never feel anything for a taiwanese PC.

A hobby OS such as MorphOS should stick to an emblematic machine, such as the Raspberry Pie, to ensure ease of access, purchase, support, and availability.

But i guess it will need a powerful CPU just to make sure we can use legacy MorphOS PPC apps and 68k apps. So much horsepower that will mostly be used to translate code and i understand the ARM chips are not powerful enough to do it yet (about the PPC emulator). I will probably still use MorphOS PCC until my machines die, but for now i'm not interested in building an AMD/Intel PC for MorphOS.

But i'm just an old fart babbling, i'm still very impressed by Bigfoot's work and the team in general, only expressing my concern. Amazing job guys.

You could buy an AMD Ryzen 5 laptop now, let it gather dust in the meantine and in some 5+ years when MorphOS x86_64 gets released this machine will also be ye trusty olde legacy hardware. :-D

I do like my PPC hardware too - but it's nice to have more options in the future! If at some (hopfully distant) point in the future both of my Powerbooks cease functioning and I am not motivated for diagnosis/research/repair I could just buy some more commaon AMD hardware (whatever will be supported) at that time. That's certainly a plus.

The MorphOS Team has you covered. You can go buy a brand new AmigaOne X5000 right now for MorphOS. It is custom hardware and I guarantee you will get emotional... Every time you remember how much you paid for it ;-)

thanks Andreas, i'm aware of it but thanks for sharing the links.
It seems i still don't feel like it's really addressed i guess ;-)

don't get my words to heart, i'm only expressing my personal opinion on the matter, which shouldn't matter to anyone :-)

I'm sure we all anticipated some of this. HyperionOS still has some extreme advocates, and obviously they are salty as hell seeing one solution thrive, while theirs' is 100% flatlined and unlikely to rise from the dead.

What else do they have to cling on to besides "muh PPC"?

I've seen no indication given by geit that this incident was with an "HyperionOS" advocate.
