Just did a similar thing on my newly required Powerbook model A1138 (sort of an impulse buy that too).
First I installed MorphOS in a dual environment with OSX. Later I did shrink the OSX partition once again to make room for linux. The installation of Lubuntu 14.04 from the live DVD was pretty straight forward. Now its updated to 16.04.
Lubuntu is probably much more easy to get going than Gentoo, but I guess you have other reasons for choosing Gentoo. One of them might be speed?
