I have followed the instructions to create a usb memory stick to install MorphOS3.9 on my G4 PowerBook, now that I have replaced the hdd with a mSATA and PATA to mSATA adapter (5 volt adapter), but when I type in the boot instructions and hit the enter key, I get these results on the screen:

    boot usb1/disk@1:,\boot.img bi umsd0:morphos.iso

    Loading ELF
    DO-QUIESCE finished_

Then nothing happens and no further input is accepted.

I'm not sure what is going wrong, or why it is not showing the

    "Quark/OpenFirmware"
    "console active"

and other system info that is shown in the example instructions for booting from a USB device.

Anyone have any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

My USB memory stick has only one partition formatted FAT32 and a copy of the morphos3.9.iso and I also copied the boot.img and boot.txt from the mac_ppc32 directory to the partition of the USB memory stick. I confirmed that the USB memory stick is located at the USB1@disk1 location by using the dev aliases command in the instructions.

    write the lines in OF

    setenv boot-device boot usb1/disk@1:,\boot.img bi umsd0:morphos.iso

    and try again

Why should he set the Environmen-Variable "boot-device" to USB-address? OF then always tries to boot from there.....

    @amigadave:
If boot.img is loading, your Stick is found by OF. But I am not sure if MOS itself can boot from a FAT-Partition......

I agree that using the setenv variable probably isn't going to fix my problem, as the OF appears to try to load the boot.img file. I am going to re-download the 3.9 iso and replace the one on my USB memory stick to see if that helps, as it appears that the Quark kernel is not getting loaded, so maybe it is corrupted.

I don't know much, but when the OF prompt replies "loading ELF", then immediately after that on the next line prints out "Do Quiesce", I am guessing that something is preventing the rest of MorphOS to be loaded. In the example shown on the official MorphOS site in the instructions for booting from USB, the next line should print out Quark and something else I can't remember, then show some system information on the next few lines. After that I assume that the boot screen should show up.

I thought I found the problem, as my iso was still named morphos-3.9.iso, and I was using just morphos.iso as indicated in the installation instructions, but I still get the same results after I have changed the name of my iso to morphos.iso. Here is the exact Open Firmware text results I am seeing after I enter this command:

    0 > boot usb1/disk@1:,\boot.img bi umsd0:morphos.iso

after that command sequence this is what the screen looks like

    0 > boot usb1/disk@1:,\boot.img bi umsd0:morphos.iso load-size=168170 adler32=7a2e32ce

    Loading ELF

    DO-QUIESCE finished_

I guess I am going to have to find which box my blank CD's/DVD's are packed in, and then burn an install disc and try to install MorphOS3.9 from the optical drive, unless someone knows what I am doing wrong.

No, I am using the correct boot.img from the Mac-PPC32 folder.

I think you should ask MOS-Developer directly (Pega1, Laire, etc.)......
