I am recently new to the MorphOS community. Being a long time amiga user since 92, and still have several amiga classic machines. One of which has Amiga 4.1 classic installed. Granted I know with my classic, 4.1 will run insanely slow. But it is fun to tinker with.

But I was looking for a next gen machine. Definitely wanted something with some backwards capabilities. Done some research and purchased a mac mini for small change. Installed MOS 3.9 and fell in love with the operating system. Granted it is a little bit of a learning curve for myself as I am no programmer, but love the challenge. I am really impressed with the responsiveness of the system. So I had to license it. Definitely wanted to help the community out and hopefully expand it further. I have been looking and upgrading through several sites that have the MorphOS files on them. And I really like the fact that it all fits in the Mac Mini. Wanted something that was really small footprint and extremely portable (that was not a laptop).

So anyway, just wanted to say hi.

    Congratulations and welcome :)

MorphOS is very Amiga-like, so there isn't much difference when installing software manually etc, and you can even use libraries etc from the real Amiga. Just remember the few differences like don't touch anything in the SYS:MorphOS/ directory but copy everything into SYS: just like in the real Amiga too. You can check contents of SYS:MorphOS/ if some file already exists in MorphOS, but that directory is always replaced in the system upgrade. Because of this dir, system upgrades go always fluently which wouldn't be possible if 3rd party and system files would be stuffed in the same dir. Also when installing MUI classes, copy them to SYS:Classes/MUI/ instead of any assign.

Prefs are also a bit different and offer a lot more to tune than classic Amiga, but they should be pretty self explaning. Go them through and find many cool things :) Also try RMB over window/screen gadgets etc...

Library section here in this forum has a lot of useful information to get started too.

Fortunately one does not need to be a programmer to use MorphOS, that's what being a user is all about. Have way too much fun! :D

    Thanks for the welcomes,

Today was a great day as my spare mac mini had just shown up in the mail. I know they are a dime a dozen now (or at least relatively cheap compared to other systems). So I figure buy an extra one and get morphos on that one as well. :)

I really see that a lot of amiga software will run straight from the OS, and I had just finished setting up E-UAE on my system. So most of the rest of the software now runs off of that.

I always get a bit overwhelmed by looking for the correct software in the file sections, so I will as for some help. My question would be. Besides using my Amiga word processor program (Final Writer) Is there one for MorphOS? Maybe one that has spreadsheet? Just curious.

Last question for tonight as well. I have a Brother printer on a Network for my house. Is there a way to print to that. Or possibly point my in the right direction to start looking for the answer (webpage, forum, etc)?

    Thanks. :)

NetPrinter in MorphOS prefs should be what you look for. Search MorphZone for 'netprinter' for relevant threads.

I once took couple screenshots from my MorphOS prefs how I've configured the network printer with the bundled netprinter.device: http://jpv.wmhost.com/pics/morphos_printer/

Thanks for the info Yasu. Of all the word processors that you have shown. Scriba is going to work the best for my needs. :-) Plus it is offering printer support which unfortunately CW does not. :-(

    Thanks
