You can't find PowerMac G5 in Europe they say...

They are not "rare", but they are fewer of them than in the States. It's not a status item over here like in the US so fewer people bought them I guess.

Must be pretty common if I just saw 40+ units available from 2 different sellers that for some reason showed up in a search for South Florida (US) only!

Anyhow those prices don't look bad at all. If anyone wants a G5, there's your chance!

You can find quite some here in Germany, too.

Perhaps I personally find use for that kind of HW before they are out. ;-)

Anyone who uses MorphOS for DVD->mpeg4 conversions etc.?

Well, none of the above ships to my destination :P

In any case, I can assure you that a PMAC G5 is indeed very rare in Greece. Yesterday I was searching for one at some local forums and I couldn't find even one, ffs!

Also, the fact that the computer weights so much is also a killer for international transportation :(

Yep, Stefanos is right, international shipping is not really an option for heavy items.
A PowerBook costs $80.50 to ship from the US and they only weigh a little over 7 pounds.
A G5? Costs about as much to ship (or more) than it costs.

I paid some 170€ for a G5. Shipping included. Rare case maybe, but it did happen to me.

From what i see on add sites in Sweden there quite a few around but the high-end models are very rare and mostly only low-end ones available.

I would carefully weigh your need to get a G5 for running MorphOS3.6, before you try to buy one. Most uses for MorphOS don't need the computing power of a G5 and they use much more power to run, so are wasteful and produce a lot of heat.

I am not against getting a G5 to run MorphOS3.6 at its fastest speed, but only suggest that for most users, a cheaper and easier to find G4 PowerMac or PowerBook, would be a better choice.

    @WB_Coder

Honestly I think the it is how you prefer to use your system. For example I always tend, when using OWB, to load all the tabs/webpages that I visit at once, more than 10, whereas most of them are bloatware and require both RAM and CPU heavy usage. In the meantime, I will have a 3.x variation up and running in the background, perhaps another (paused or not) emulated system for gaming (mame/snes/genesisplus), while messing with a new project on Blender in a different screen or SoundBankster. So, although there is no one single application that requires the horsepower of a G5, if you are going for a truly multitasking system and combine the resources needed for running many applications in parallel, then imho, you need a fast machine.

This sounds like the 1.0 GiB RAM that MorphOS currently supports on the G5 may become tight very fast ;-)

Funny, I was thinking that too when Stefanos mentioned his browsing habits (which are a bit like mine).
In this case, my iBook (while it only has a 1.42 GHz processor) would have an advantage with its 1.5 GBs of memory.
Have the developers disclosed why we do not have support for 1.5 GBs of memory with the G5s?

It becomes tight here fast with the OWB memory leak JS Core leak.

I remember 0,5 GB RAM is dedicated for PCI. I don't remember what the other 0,5 GB was for.

I also don't remember that the reason for MorphOS on G5 reserving 0.5 GiB more address space than on G4 has been disclosed. When I asked bigfoot in September last year I got no answer.

    Strange, isn't it?
Usually Mark is pretty straight forward about such issues.
