well, there were and there are amiga servers out there, running amiga os so if it can be done with an amiga then it can be done with morphos as well.
i guess if you dont use the system at all and it just runs the server then it has to be stable. i've heard about a3k servers with hundreds of days of uptime here in hungary.
btw apache and php ports are exist for morphos as well right?

    @Krashan

Ok thanks, sounds straight forward enough.
In your post I notice you put www.morphos-files.org. I was going to go with .net. Is .org your preference or don't you mind?
As soon as you reply to this post I'll get the domain registered for three years. Hopefully we'll all still be enjoying morphos for at least that long.

But, even as a challenge, could it be done? I guess you need Apache web service, plus PHP runtime, plus database service. Do we have these on MorphOS?

Sure it can. But as you have noticed, it would be running Linux ports on non-Linux system just to prove something (well, to prove what?...). Of course it can be done "the MorphOS way". There is MUIBase, there is ARexx, there is no WWW server (non-Linux, thttpd is linux port as well), but some trivial one can be programmed. But then, such a solution has no advantages over the standard Apache, PHP, MySQL trio. And it will be totally unportable. Imagine that in some future we will have a mirror[s] of MorphOS Files. Then if done with MorphOS software, any mirror will require MorphOS machine connected to the network...

I don't mind, .net is as good as .org. But no .com, please ;-).

By the way, I miss something very important in your database: The home page of each file (just like Luky's site has). Just a way to get more information, before downloading.

More work, more floating links... Google is better at indexing links than I will ever be... And who said MorphOS Files is to replace Luky's site? They are complementary. There are many files linked to Luky's site, which will never make into MorphOS Files.

I didn't even consider getting a .com as I believe they should be used for commercial sites as they are intended ;-)

Ok I have registered www.morphos-files.net. I've changed the DNS entry to the IP you posted before so hopefully that will do what you need :-)

    That's great! :-)
I know that a domain name wasn't essential for your site but it deserves it!

I've just added a RSS feed with 20 latest uploads to MorphOS Files

    http://www.morphos-files.net/rssfeed.php

The feed conforms to RSS 2.0 specification. Of course feed generation is automatic, so it gets updated when I add a file with no additional work.

    This feed does not validate.

It validated before, but then I used an ampersand inside a file name. It was a bad idea... After replacing it, the feed validates again.

You don't have permission to access /dnl.php on this server.

Fixed. I started with an access rule, which forbidden direct linking to downloads, but it is too restrictive, as links are not links to physical files anyway.

Sure, the link is immediate download. There are no readme pages or package pages like on Aminet. The only alternative is to link all RSS items to index.php (which is the recent page). It may be misleading however when one reads some outdated feed, so files are not in the recent anymore.

Nice effort and all, but what's wrong with Aminet? Has it been terminated for good or what?

    :-?
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)

No it hasn't. You can continue to use it. I had my own reasons to make MorphOS Files, but "something is wrong with Aminet" was not a reason.

Regarding the domain name, how about morphos.net? Wouldn't that be cool? ;-) Bigfoot, how about it? :-)

I consider taking morphos.net domain (assuming it was free, which is not the case) for a smal private project a cybersquatting ;-).
