Was it a type III or II Sata drive? I had a similar problem with those a few years back, backwards compatible my bottom,

MacMIni == IDE/PATA

So either a PATA-SSD or mSATA + adaptor.

Yeah.....sure......but.....

There is simple no space in the Mini to install a 2.5“ SSD + adaptor.

Edit: One suggestion I saw online that might intimidate some of you, but makes sense to me...
Pull the SSD's board out of its case (which does void the warranty) and plug it into the adapter.
You should gain enough room without the case.

Considering the price and capacity differential, it seem worth the risk to me.

OR, you could consider a 1.8 mSATA drive, SSD or a standard mechanical hard drive. I have seen mSATA to PATA adapters in the $13 range.

Just like with the Efika cables are a complete nogo, both only take drives directly connected to the PCB (a small riser in the case of the MIni.

With the Mini you have an plastic inlay which includes the fan and is designed for optimal airflow that just has the space for 1x 2.5" HDD/SSD and the slim DVD.

Edith:
mSATA + adaptor would be even cheaper than SATA + adaptor and you don't need to rip your drive apart.

While you could still pull a 2.5" SSD out of its case, using a 1.8" mSATA drive is a safer route.

Gentoo is much more of a pain in the neck to install, configure, and even update, but I feel more proud of the results.

Are you using yaboot or grub2? I'm thinking of trying to get grub2 to work.

I'm happy so far with gpu acceleration working, as well as networking, multiboot, and (finally) firefox.

I am still using yaboot, but sine I also use kexec to boot newer kernels from existing kernels, poor yaboot is barely used at all, lol :) I should indeed try grub2, just never thought of it as OF boot menu + yaboot always worked well enough. Would love to hear more about your adventures with grub2 :) The G4 mini are quite nice Linux systems, especially when you can decide yourself what features and packages your want and need, and trim it down to that, which Gentoo is perfect for IMO. Oh, and CFLAGS, hehe.

Btw, if you are sick of watching compilations scrolling by in your terminal window, you can set EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--quiet-build" in your make.conf and enjoy the pretty colours and stats :)

And a heads up, in case you are experimenting - I have no go with gcc-8.1.0 and kernel building, so better keep gcc-7.3 around, at least for building kernels.

The computer only has one single core processor (which runs hot if Firefox is being used). The conky script I stole assumes multiple processor cores, hence the “average” wording.
