    Yep, it that time of the year again for me to begin preparing for this year's AmiWest Show. Another year for me to attempt to improve on what I presented last year. I was not happy at all with last year's presentation.

    I have less excuses this year, as MorphOS3.0 has been released and I have no excuse for not learning to use it better, now that I have wireless networking via my NetGear WNCE2001-100NAR, or my TP-Link battery powered wireless router working in WISP mode.

    It will be harder for me to come up with an excuse this year if I don't do a better job at making a presentation during the show, but I will ask once again for other MorphOS users to attend and make the presentation, or assist me with the presentation, if any of you can make it to the 2012 AmiWest Show.

    Like before, please place your suggestions for what you think should be presented during the show in this thread, and I will attempt to include all of the suggestions in my presentation.

    Last year I had so many problems with networking and then the last minute problems of the G4 PowerBook not being able to use it's external monitor DVI out, to connect to the big screen projector device, so I had to switch to using my G4 MacMini at the very last minute, which really frustrated and confused me and basically ruined my presentation of the G4 PowerBook running the beta version of MorphOS3.0.

    I know I have promised it before, but I will say it again . . . I will try to make this year's presentation much better than last year's (which should not be hard considering how terrible last year's presentation was).

    For this year's show I was thinking of setting up one or two of my G4 MorphOS computers right next to my "First Contact" AmigaOne X1000 and my Raspberry Pi running AROS, plus I might also setup my FPGA Arcade Replay board running either AmigaOS3.x, or AROS 68k.

    I was also thinking that I would adjust the theme on one of my MorphOS computers to make it look identical, or very close to how OS4.1.5 looks on my X1000, to show people how configurable MorphOS3.0 can be, since many of the objections to MorphOS seem to be cosmetic in nature. I will leave the second MorphOS computer with either a stock MorphOS3.0 look, or the modified look of the Pack Ultimate, or set up a third MorphOS computer, so I can have all three styles running at the same time.

    Although I am not interested in benchmark comparisons between OS4.1.5 and MorphOS3.0, but I am sure there will be one or two people attending the show that will want to compare OS4.1.5 running on my X1000 against MorphOS3.0 running on my 1.5GHz G4 MacMini, or 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook, or my overclocked 1.5GHz to 1.67GHz G4 PowerMac. So, for those two people, I will have a couple of programs that are as close to identical as possible running on each computer. I am open to suggestions, but don't get too excited, the X1000 runs quite fast and I am not going to purposely choose any program that is known to run better on MorphOS3.0, unless I also pick another program that shows how well the X1000 runs as well. In fact, I will be asking the OS4.x users for their suggestions on which programs they would like to see me running on the X1000 to best show off it's performance and features. That is only fair, since I am here asking for suggestions on how to show off how well MorphOS3.0 runs during the AmiWest Show.

    If anyone wants to help me out with an "OS4.x Look-Alike" MorphOS3.0 theme, or help me create one, send me a message here or via email.

    So, without further explanation, please leave your suggestions and comments about this year's AmiWest Show in this thread.

    P.S. My invitation still stands for anyone who wants to join me in attending the AmiWest Show, but this year I will be traveling from my home to the area near Sacramento several days before the show begins.

    What version PowerMac do you have again? Maybe I could let you borrow my 2Ghz NewerTechnology CPU board to make it an honest comparison.

    Good post Dave sounds like a fun show. I really like the new banner ad. My advice to the organizers is too branch out to the vintage computer geeks not just amiga sites. They really need much more publicity.

    For guys in usa who have never been to an Amiga show you should go! Its the only one left really, and you really get to geek out with amiga guys and meet some of the amiga heros!

    *edit*
    Just re read your post i'm not a fan of this "os 4 look alike" stuff for your morphos boxes for presentations... Morphos has its own style and look. Sure its skinable with os4 look, but why do that?

    With custom morphos skins, backdrops, and configured MUI morphos can look way better than os4

    Better than letting me borrow your 2GHz accelerator (which I would be worried about damaging, or it dying of old age), you should come to the show with your PMac and set it up on my table instead of my over-clocked MDD PMac. You will have fun visiting with all the rest of the show attendee's, I promise.

    @Trevor,

    Looking forward to seeing you there again this year. Let me buy you a drink or two this year, as small show of appreciation for all you have done and continue to do.

    @magnetic,

    I explained the reason for putting an OS4.x look-a-like theme on only one of my MorphOS computers. To show those who criticize MorphOS purely on cosmetic reasons, how much like OS4.x, MorphOS3.0 can be, if they only put in a small amount of effort. Then they will need to find other reasons to avoid MorphOS3.0. If I continue to show how their reasons for avoiding MorphOS3.0 can be eliminated in one way or another, it might lead to just a few of these people trying out MorphOS3.0 and seeing how much they would like to use it.

    @AW,

    As usual, thanks for the links to the OS4.x theme materials. I will check them out ASAP. I was fairly certain that someone had already done something like that, but I don't know how current those themes might be, when compared to the latest versions of OS4.1.5.

    Edit: Looks like that theme was made about 7 years ago and needs to be updated. I will have to see what can be done about that.

    I wonder if it is just as easy to make OS4.1.5 look like MorphOS3.0's Ambient desktop and windows, as it is to make MorphOS3.0 to look like OS4.1.5? It would be fun to switch them back and forth and confuse some of the show attendee's, as a joke on them. Something fun to look into between now and Oct.

    Glad to read that you will be able to make it to this year's AmiWest Show Samurai_Crow. Please make sure you introduce yourself to me during some part of the show. One of my regrets after each show is that I can't remember more of the names and put them together with their online nicknames, so I can remember who people are for the rest of the year. I can't remember if we ever met in person before?

    The AmiWest Show gets better with each new person who attends, as it is really about the people we meet there. I know that this forum site has much more members who live too far away from Sacramento, California to consider attending the show, but I hope the rest of the members who do live in areas that make it possible for them to attend this year's AmiWest Show, will make an effort to come. I would personally love to see so many people attend that it strains the size of the two joined conference rooms in the hotel that they use to their full capacity and over flows out into the parking lot. The facilities and hotel where the AmiWest Show is now held are 1000% better than the old hotel where it was held a few years ago.

    So, for you members who have the vacation time available to you and the money to afford a trip to the 2012 AmiWest Show from your homes far away, please come join us. For members who live in the USA, Canada & Mexico, what is your excuse for not attending? How can you resist?

    For me, there are not a lot of other activities which are more fun than getting together with a bunch of Amiga enthusiasts, sharing information, stories and a drink or two with friends, making new friends, and buying a needed bit of Amiga gear or software at special show prices.

    Edit: For you original (Classic) Amiga users out there, the SACC club that puts on the show each year always has a good supply of used Amiga gear and software at their booth to sell at ridiculously low prices. This year I am going to fill my car with 90% of my Classic Amiga collection and duplicate boxed Amiga software, and bring it to the show to sell, or almost give away. I encourage all of you wanting to buy/sell/swap your Amiga hardware and software to come and do the same. If there are not enough display tables to rent for people who want to sell their Amiga gear and software, I will sell my stuff from the back tailgate of my car in the parking lot. So, if you are an original (Classic) Amiga user and want to get a great deal on that missing piece of hardware, or a boxed software that is missing from your collection, come to the show to buy or trade for it. Remember that part of the first day of the show is dedicated to people helping each other to fix hardware and software problems with any kind of Amiga, or MorphOS, or AROS system. It appears that this repair session might be extended even longer than in previous years, because an extra day has been added to the beginning of the show, when the repair session always takes place.

    @pan1k,

    I always have fun at AmiWest Shows!

    Posting this from my X1000 at the 2012 AmiWest Show Programming Seminar, which is about to begin in 9 minutes.

    I wish I had studied more during the last week, but I was distracted with my youngest Son and his Windows PC, which we re-built with a new motherboard, processor and 8gb of RAM, plus then decided to replace the PSU while I was troubly shooting for the past week.

    The problem that was causing it to freeze up ended up being the AMD SATA Controller driver. Once I deleted it and Windows 7 Home Premium installed a generic Microsoft SATA Controller driver, the freezing and irratic behavior stopped, but that means that the 6gb/s speed of the SATA hard drive is gone as well.

    Time to get into Programming Learning Mode! I will report more about the AmiWest Show and this seminar later today, or tomorrow.

    I am home now and have spent most of the day today, all of last night and Monday afternoon, resting, sleeping, etc., trying to recover from the 14 hour drive coming home from the 2012 AmiWest Show. The reason it took so long this year to get home, is because I was towing a "Car-Dolly" that I borrowed from a friend to take a car up to near Eureka, CA (google that and you will see how far away from Big Bear Lake, CA that drive is, specially when I took the Coast Highway most of the way to avoid the heat of the central valley and towing a heavy car over the "Grapevine" grade on the 5 Freeway, or the Tehachapi Pass that goes from the High Desert to Bakersfield).

    On the way home I had a passenger that had taken the Greyhound Bus from Los Angeles to Sacramento, and did not want to sit in that uncomfortable seat for another 9 to 11 hours, on the way home. Alex Carmona did help me drive 2 or 3 of the 14 hour drive home, but unfortunately for me, Alex lives as far West as you can get from my home, without getting your car wet in the Pacific Ocean, so that is why it took me an additional several hours to get from his home to my friend's house to drop off the "Car-Dolly" and then on to my home.

    I thought it was just all of the driving that is now causing me so much additional pain and aches, but I realize now that I have caught a severe head cold and fever, and I might be also getting a sore throat with it, and I just hope that it is not Strep Throat that will require a doctor visit and anti-biotics to resolve.

    The Programming Seminar was good and the 2012 AmiWest Show was great this year for MorphOS3.x users. I have never had so much traffic at my display table. Specially with people taking out pens and paper to take notes about everything I had to share with them. I am willing to bet that there will be several new MorphOS3.1 registrations within the next few weeks that are a direct result of my display at the 2012 AmiWest Show. These few couples and single people that spent literally hours at my table using MorphOS3.1 on either my 1.5GHz G4 MacMini, my 1.67GHz G4 17" PowerBook, or my Single 1.25GHz G4 MDD PowerMac Tower over-clocked to 1.58GHz, were very interested and acted like they were going to buy a used G4 Mac computer the same day, or very soon after talking with me, or they already had an old G4 Mac system at home that could run MorphOS3.1, and just wanted to make sure they had the right information on how to set it up, so they could try the demonstration version before buying a registered copy.

    I have had a good deal of interest in MorphOS in the past from some of the people who attend the AmiWest Shows, but not like it was this year. These people took up so much of my time and were so interested in every detail of the hardware and software that could be run on MorphOS3.1, and they were so positive in their responses that they were going to go buy a used PPC Mac, or they already had a supported PPC Mac computer, I have no doubt that they all will soon be visiting us here on MorphZone.org and asking for help in setting up and running software on MorphOS3.1.

    I will write a more complete report on the 2012 AmiWest Show tomorrow, or soon. I really feel very bad now with my cold amplifying every ache and pain I have all over my body and head. I just want to pass out and not feel anything for as many hours as I can stay unconscious for. Even the time released Morphine and Hydrocodone is not helping at all tonight.

    All I want to say is that it was a great show and I got to hang out with one of the Commodore, PA Amiga Engineers that worked on both the CDTV-CR and the CD32 and her initials are on one or both of those motherboards. She had some amazing stories and was very entertaining and I hope to spend more time with her in the future, as she is now a member of SACC and plans on attending many, most, or all of their future meetings and the AmiWest Shows in the future.

    Good Night!

    Edit: It is now 2am and I cannot sleep because of my head cold, but my eyes won't stay focused and I can't read half of what I am writing, so don't be too surprised if I make many typing mistakes.

    I have read on some other Amiga websites that a few members are very upset that there appears to me no new information from Hyperion about the PPC e300 core NetBook that Hyperion announced last year during the 2011 AmiWest Show. There did not seem to be too many people that were attending the 2012 AmiWest Show that agreed with that opinion, or if they did, they were not very verbal about their disappointment with Hyperion's decision to keep the progress of porting AmigaOS4.1.x, or 4.2 to the NetBook. Steve Solie was visably upset that he could not share any new information about the NetBook yet.

    Trevor made at least one, and maybe two short speeches about the future products that A-Eon and his partner, AmigaKit, were working on with Varisys. He did definitely say that the current batch of X1000 computers would be the last, unless extraordinary circumstances and product demand continued to be very strong. So, it appears that the 2nd batch, or 3rd batch as Trevor calls it, because he counts the batch that the were sold to the Beta-Testers, will most likely be the last batch sold, due to the difficulty and high price of finding sorce the PA6T CPU that the X1000 uses.

    For those who still want an X1000, but can't get one because they are sold out in the near future, if not already in the present, Trevor and Matthew of AmigaKit will have a new PPC design for sale in the future. Another new PPC based desktop computer, but the details of this new project that A-Eon and AmigaKit are working on with Varisys. I hope that Trevor is very successful with this 2nd design and that it can be sold at a price that is a little less than what he was forced to sell the X1000 at due to the price of the rare and discontinued CPU and the re-design of the motherboard during it's development cycle. Hopefully Varisys has learned a lot about what is required to make an AmigaOS4.1.x computer during their design and production of the X1000 Nemo 2.1 motherboard for the X1000.

    I was there too. I directed at least one person from the AROS table to Dave's MorphOS table if they had an old PowerMac to use. I wasn't able to haul my old PowerMac G4 to the show after all since driving would have taken too much time away from work.

    Sorry that I let you down by not demonstrating DigiBooster 3 during the 2012 AmiWest Show. I had fully intended to do so, but as often happens at all AmiWest Shows for me, the time goes by too quickly and the pace is so hectic with so much going on. This year was the most challenging for me, due to my back pain being so bad I needed to use my wheelchair almost every day by 3pm, or 4pm, because my legs would stop working reliably and the pain was too great.

    The good news is that my 2nd back surgery appears to have been approved and will take place in less than 2 weeks on November 5th. Before my 1st back surgery I was confident and looking forward to feeling better in the weeks and months after the surgery. This time I am genuinely scared and very worried that this 2nd surgery may not work to reduce any of my pain, or in the worst case, it may increase my pain like the 1st surgery results did, which forced me to give up working at a very good job that I had worked all my life to obtain.

    With back surgery there are no guarantee's and the percentage of people who are helped after any surgery is somewhere between 60% & 85%, depending on which kind of procedure is being done and what kind of back pain the patient is experiencing. If I were not so desperate to get some relief and try to get back to a normal lifestyle, I would not be taking this chance a 2nd time.

    Thanks to everyone who has expressed their well wishes and concern for my health. If you are a religious person, you may want to put me in your prayers on November 5th. I am not a member of any organized religion, but have generally tried to live my life following the good parts of all religions, so I guess I believe that there is a strong chance that there could be an omnipotent being, but I have not yet designated what name to give him/her.

    One of my goals for the next twelve months is to promote the 2013 AmiWest Show when ever I have the opportunity, and to do what ever I can to help the SACC organizers double the attendance of the show for next year.

    One thing some of you may not realize is that when you spend the time and effort to haul 6 or 7 computers to each AmiWest Show and set up a display table, it takes up a great deal of time and it is hard for me to experience everything else that is happening during the show when I am trying to keep an eye on my display table, answer questions, reboot my 2nd G4 PowerBook that I was using as an Internet Server by connecting my Ethernet port to a 5 port switch, so the rest of my computers being displayed would all have an Internet connection. The hotel's security log-in page would pop up at random times and take down the Internet connection to all of the computers I was displaying, so it is like a constant baby-sitting job. I try to listen to all of the presentations being given, but the room where the show is taking place gets very loud when 50+ people are all talking at the same time and before you know it, you are shouting at someone who is only 3 feet away from you. Maybe I am getting old and need hearing aids?

    As I wrote in this thread, or another thread here or on AW.net, one of the high points of this year's AmiWest Show, was getting to meet and talk with Beth Richard (not Richards, as I might have incorrectly written previously), who was a chip design engineer at Commodore, in Pennsylvania, from 1990 to 1994, IIRC. She has her initials on the motherboard of the CD32 and I think also on the CDTV-CR. She worked on the Beauty and Grace chips and brought several of her Amiga computers in to the show to have them worked on during the Friday evening Classic Amiga Repair Clinic, including her own CDTV-CR. Beth says that only 64 of these units were ever produced, plus a handful of custom hand built prototypes, which would bring the total number of units to slightly over 70, so it is more rare than I had first imagined when I first saw one 2 years ago when Carl Sassenrath sold his CDTV-CR, along with lots of other Amiga hardware from his basement or closets during the 2010 AmiWest Show.

    Beth Richard said that she wants to get at least 2 or 3 of her Amiga computers working, including her CDTV-CR, which needs some surface mount soldered components replaced, so she can keep these 2 or 3 Amiga computers for herself, but would probably be selling the rest of her Amiga computers during next year's AmiWest Show. I know that she won't be selling her CDTV-CR, and that the rest of her Amiga collection may not be any different than the Classic Amiga computers that you and I already own, but if you would like to purchase an Amiga computer that a former Commodore Chip Engineer had previously owned, I suggest that you make sure you attend the 2013 AmiWest Show.

    Talking with Beth and listening to her stories about the last few days of Commodore made this year's AmiWest Show special. I know that I was not the only person who was entertained by Beth's humor and charm, as Trevor also seemed like he could not get enough of her stories and took a few pictures of her with his cell phone, which will most likely show up in his blog soon. It is things like this that make each AmiWest Show special and why my invitation remains open to everyone who is interested in attending an AmiWest Show, but lives far away and could only justify such a trip if they brought their whole family and made a real vacation out of the trip to the USA. I live within a 2 to 3 hour drive to most of the tourist attractions in Southern California, including Sea World (2-1/2 to 3 hours), Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Magic Mountain (2-1/2 to 3 hours), Universal Studios Tour and Amusement Park, all of the beaches of Southern California, Palm Springs, Las Vegas (4 hours), the London Bridge on the Colorado River at Lake Havasu, and of course my own little resort heaven of Big Bear Lake at 7,000 feet elevation, with a man made lake that is about 15 miles long and 1 mile wide and has excellent fishing and boating with water skiing, although it often gets too windy in the afternoon's for skiing and you would be better off on a catamaran sail boat, or wind surfing when the wind kicks up. Oct. temperatures are still comfortable during the days usually, but can get cold during the evenings and nights. Rarely we have snow arrive for Halloween, as most of our snow comes in December, January and February, but freak snow storms can come any month of the year here, if just the right conditions occur.

    Depending on the degree of success of my November 5th 2nd back surgery, I have decided that if it goes well and I am able to do most things that I used to be able to do before my back condition started to get worse, I have decided to move closer to the Sacramento area. If my back condition remains the same, I may be forced to stay where I am currently at, as my younger Brother helps me do some things. If I can, I will be moving to a Houseboat on the Sacramento River Delta, and living full time on a 35 foot to 65 foot long Houseboat. I have already done some research during this last trip to that area and the more I think about it, the more I like the idea.

    My invitation will remain open to anyone who wishes to come stay with me during the time around the Oct. AmiWest Shows, but the accommodations may be a bit different on the Houseboat, than they are at the house in Big Bear Lake. If it is possible to move the houseboat to a marina that is closer to the 2013 AmiWest Hotel, that is what I will do next Oct., assuming that I am able to conclude the purchase of a Houseboat within the next 12 months and make the move.

    Typically a 35 to 65 foot long Houseboat can accommodate sleeping space for between 6 and 16 people, so if I am lucky enough to purchase a Houseboat before next year's AmiWest Show, AND there is a marina that will allow me to tie up to their docks for a few days during the time the 2013 AmiWest Show is taking place, we may have to have a party on the Houseboat to celebrate my move and the success of my 2nd back surgery which will have allowed me to pursue that dream of living on a Houseboat closer to both of my Sons, my Grandson, and all of my friends in the SACC group. I will even be able to attend all the SACC club meetings if I live that close to Sacramento.

    Other news from the 2012 AmiWest Show is that the Programming Seminar was a success and will be extended to 3 days next year and the 2013 AmiWest Show itself will also be extended to a full 3 days and 3 evenings. The better hotel location that we have used the last two years before this year, has already been reserved, so we cannot lose it like we did this year with a late registration. It has been reserved for the entire 6 days and I strongly suggest that anyone who is interested in programming and the Amiga of any kind, come and spend the whole 6 days with us. This will allow me and others to get even more out of this fantastic event.

    This year there were challenges that were all related to the hotel location, so by returning to the former Holiday Inn Express that we used for the 2010 and 2011 AmiWest Shows, none of those issues will exist and the show should go much smoother and we will again have access to the two display screens at each end of the meeting hall and not have to project images on a wall instead. We will have better hotel rooms and a choice of either the Holiday Inn Express, or the Hampton Inn which is right next door and also has good rooms available at reasonable prices. I am going to attempt to go to the hotel a day or two in advance and get us a dedicated Internet connection, without the hotel's usual web based security system popping up every 20 to 40 minutes and stopping our Internet connection until someone can log-in again with the hotel's password. I will also make sure that the hotel and/or the SACC club has all the electrical cords and power strips that we need.

    What I really want to see at next year's AmiWest Show are some really experienced MorphOS3.1 users and developers. If I can convince just one of the MorphOS Dev. Team members to attend and to do a presentation of MorphOS3.x at the 2013 AmiWest Show, I will count my efforts as a success.

    Does anyone else here agree with me that a bounty should be set up to cover all, or most of the expenses to send one of the MorphOS3.x Dev. Team members to the 2013 AmiWest Show is a good idea? I know that money is only half the problem of sending some one from the Dev. Team to an AmiWest Show, and that I will have to convince one of the Dev. Team members that is it worth their time and effort to do a presentation during the 2013 AmiWest Show and that they will receive a warm welcome from the SACC AmiWest Show organizers, if they do agree to attend and do a presentation of MorphOS3.x, and maybe even a short seminar on how to get started programming on MorphOS3.x.

    I believe that we might be on the verge of an increase in interest in Next Gen. Amiga computer systems, as it appears that more people are showing up at the AmiWest Show and asking lots of questions. Some of these people have been away from the Amiga for many years, and some of them have been using their original Classic Amiga computers and were not previously interested in any of the Next Gen. choices, or were turned away because of all the fighting that was previously taking place. In either case, it is clear to me that more people are becoming interested in Next Gen. Amiga computing. Perhaps it is because of all the current choices we have with new and used hardware, and perhaps it is because of the recent improvements in all of the Next Gen. Amiga choices that have made it more feasible to use one of them for many of your everyday computing tasks.

    That is more than enough for now. I will write more about the 2012 AmiWest Show if I think of anything else I missed. Ask questions and maybe you will jog my memory about some particular topic that was discussed during this year's AmiWest Show.
    MorphOS - The best Next Gen Amiga choice.

    I hope for MorphOS 3.2 (at least) users and developers one year from now ;-)

    re: Flying a MorphOS developer to AmiWest 2013

    If one or more people qualified to accept an invitation like this would be prepared to tentatively show their interest, I think I could put $50 toward it.

    To give a really rough idea of what the flight portion of the expenses might cost, Berlin to LA return starts at about $1055 economy, $2100 premium economy & $3765 business class.

    Maybe a better way to describe a bounty like this is as a subsidy for the developer's expenses in getting to AmiWest.
    PPC assembly ain't so bad... ;)
