BTW - As many of you know, I live in Southern Delaware not far from the Delaware Bay.
Apparently this damned hurricane is coming to shore right near the mouth of said bay.
    Not cool.
Wish us luck here on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.

I hope you live high above the river, so your home will not be flooded by the rising water.

Are you able to cover your windows with plywood to protect yourself from flying debris? Once the windows are broken and the wind can get inside, the pressure difference can do much more damage, even lifting the roof off of some buildings, depending on how they are built.

My suggestion is to cover all the windows with plywood that is at least 1/2-inch in thickness, and then evacuate to some place out of the path of the storm. You are always welcome to visit me here for a few days, or a week if you like.

    Good Luck!

We live about a block away from the Mispillion river, which feeds into the Delaware Bay at Slaughter Beach.
A little trivia, while not actually depicted, Slaughter Beach is one of the locations in George Romero's "Survival of the Dead".
We're on high ground so flooding is not a problem and I'm hoping we don't have any broken windows.
We're well stocked with food, water, batteries, candles, and a crank operated radio.

No rain yet and the wind hasn't picked up, but its a nasty gray outside right now.
And I have to be a work Tuesday (the same day my wife has Dr.s appts.).

Well, going to the kitchen to make breakfast (since who knows if we'll have power later).
    Wish I had a generator.
I have plans to start installing solar panels next month with some deep cycle batteries for storage.
That could prove useful for situations like this.

Curiously enough, this is the second year in a row that we've had a storm like this.
And globally the weather just seems harsher.
Climate change showing its ugly head?

    Who knows.

    good luck jim!

I just don't understand why people are building houses made of wood instead of stone and cement in the united states.
i think that would be the perfect insurance you can have.
here in germany we had a lot of hurricanes with 120km/h in the past years and no roofs were blown away.

That's so cool. Global village (what we've become).
Yeah, its raining, but the wind hasn't picked up and its beginning to look like the predictions may have been over-stated.

    Hey Cego,
I wish it was still legal to build with stone in my community. But even concrete might be better then wood.

NOW the wind is picking up (almost 11:00 am Monday).
A State of Emergency has been declared in Delaware and we are no allowed to travel except for essential services.

Wood structures are cheaper to build in the USA and are very resilient when earthquakes occur, compared to a brick, stone, or concrete structure that is more rigid. Wood structures move and flex, so they sustain little to no damage when moderate earthquakes occur. In Calif., and a few other states, that is important.

120km/hour is a lot less than 100 to 120 mph, but even stone, or brick homes usually have wood roof structures and if the connection between the roof framing and the stone or brick walls is not sufficiently strong, then when windows are broken, there will be a chance that the roof could be lifted off the walls of the home.

The code requirements in most states has changed significantly over the last 10 to 15 years with regard to the connectors that anchor the roof structure to the walls, so hopefully most newer homes will not lose their roof structures during high wind events and broken windows. It is the older homes that are at risk, because the older codes did not require much in the way of connectors for the roof to wall connection.

Hang in there Jim. I hope the storm does not get as bad as predicted and it moves past you quickly and without too much damage to any of the structures.

Its actually kind of hairy here right now.
The storm hit the shore at 2:00 PM and now about two hours later its got some pretty strong gust.

We've got a few roof leaks and we've had to literarly drag the dogs outside to get them to do their business.

And as anyone who has been here or on Amiga.org has probably noticed I'm posting a lot.

I'm also working a video cards at the same time.

    Fun stuff.

    Take care all.
