There is a current discussion on the Low End Mac mailing list titled G-Group about using the Flash Player written for Intel Macs on PPC G4 & G5 Mac computers. It is reported that if you manually install this Intel Flash Player, it will work on your PPC Mac when running OSX10.4, or 10.5.

I have not tried it yet, but will probably give it a go. There is even a link to the file needed, in case the PPC owners do not have another Intel Mac to rip the file from.

Just thought this might interest some of you who are dual booting MorphOS and MacOSX.

That's not what the matter is about, let me quote from that discussion:

"If you read the ReadMe file which comes with the referenced Zip, then you get a slightly different version of what is going on. According to the file, the Zip actually contains a copy of the last PPC-compatible version which has then been hacked to report a later version number as required for the Facebook test. I think the assumption here is that while sites may look for a later version, they really only use features from the older version."

I must have misunderstood one or more of the posters in that discussion then. I am pretty sure I was not the only one who read it and thought that the file was ripped from an Intel Mac and can search though my trash for the post that suggested that was the way to get the file needed, and not some PPC file that is hacked.

But as you know I am too lazy to get into such arguments and save my energy to post more trivial arguments to piss off Andreas when I want a laugh.

    Thanks for the correction.

Edit: I guess I am not so lazy today.

Fortunately, there's a solution. This seems crazy, but they're saying that the current version and all previous versions that were "Intel only" actually work fine on PPC Macs, the problem is that Adobe's installer won't allow the installation. You need to manually move the current version of "Flash Player.plugin" into Library>Internet Plug-Ins and then repair the permissions. You can trash the old version of the file, or compress it and save it as an "old" version.

Once you manually install this and quit and relaunch your browser you'll have the latest Flash Player and no websites including Facebook will give you an error message about needing to update Flash Player. It works fine.

The problem is you'd need an Intel Mac to get the current version from, or you can download it ready to install manually from here:

Yes, obviously, for instance the one I quoted.

Yes, one such person was the opener of that thread on that mailing list, whom you just quoted. However, that doesn't change the fact that he was wrong and thus corrected by the first reply in that thread, which is what I have quoted in my previous posting.

Go on, laughter is the best medicine after all :-)

    You're welcome.

There are so many messages on that list that have little to zero value to me, I skim through them quickly before deletion, so that is my excuse for not reading every reply thoroughly and seeing the reply that you quoted. I only saved the message that gave the instructions on how and where to get the fix from.
