PowerMac 3,1 + Rage 128 P = Gfx Garbage !

Today I'll downloaded MOS 2.6 and tried it on my old PowerMac 3,1 with Rage 128 P but all I get is gfx garbage after MOS has booted from CD :(

Also booting with ALT Key pressed and then selecting the MOS CD to boot from didn't help !

Is there a workaround for it ?

Oh btw. if anyone got trouble with booting MOS 2.6 (hanging on the Red Open Firmware Screen) : Try to set the jumper from DVD Drive from Slave to Master, that should do the trick, I almost gave up on that issue today allready ;)

Can you find out which PN number your Rage128Pro card has ? Seems that there are different versions of this card around or at least different roms. There should be some "PN xxx-xxxxx-xx" printed on the board and probably some version sticker on the ROM like "R128P 72701". Does this card have VGA/ADC outputs or VGA/DVI ?

    My card has PN 109-72700-02.

the best workaround is getting a Radeon I think ;-)

No serious, I saw someone else reporting something about the Rage, but can't remember where. Use the search I think.

    It was there:

    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7418&forum=11

But as you can read, Fred_AROS already tried to no avail the workaround that worked for shortcircuit.

Yes, I allready found that one on my search here in the forum ;)

Well, I will get a Radeon for sure but ONLY when I?m satisfied with MOS on my old PowerMac ... don?t want to spend money for something I?ll use only one time ;)

Why shouldn't you like it... If you like AROS ( and I think that because of your nickname) because it has that "Amiga-feeling", MorhpOS will also give you that feeling.

Ok, seems some more research is needed regarding Rage128Pro on early PMac models. There are more flavours of it around than expected.

I also had the same problem.
I solved this by installing linux on my G4 400 MHz Sawtooth.
    I run linux before MorphOS.
After initiating the graphics card by linux, ATI Rage in my G4 under MorphOS works without problems.

Then what does linux do, what MorphOS doesn't ?

    Update:
Ok, here is a quick test hack for users experiencing the issue with PMac/Rage128Pro which unfortunately requires to go into OpenFirmware on startup (that means to keep LeftWin RightAltGr , "O" and "F" pressed all together on a std pc keyboard on poweron or right after reboot)

    enter:

    0 90001660 rb!

    then

    mac-boot

If that doesn't help please send a PM with the output of

    90001660 rb@ .

to me (don't miss the dot as the final argument in that line!).

    Thx for your help.

    Ok, works fine :)

Another thing : If anyone with a PowerMac has Problems getting into Open Firmware Console (like me), try the following :

Complete power off the PowerMac, hold LEFTWIN + ALTGR + O + F on keyboard AND HOLD THE POWERBUTTON (I know, it looks like making yoga in front of computer :D ) and wait until the open firmware console appears ;)

And remember to hold all buttons until consol appears, ALSO THE POWER BUTTON !!!

I might aswell post here aswell (I also answered in another thread) but I had the same problem and the Open Firmware commands fixed it for me! Awesome, now I just have to get home from work so I can actually play around with the OS :)

    8-)

Tell me how to hold the cam too

But when holding O + F + ALTGR with right hand and WINKEY + POWERBUTTON with left hand while also holding the keyboard in position in front of your PowerMac it works

well, you probably ran into exactly the related problem that is supposed to be fixed by that OF workaround.
