Why ask for more hardware support (right now)?

For now, I'm going to give up a bad habit, speculating on or mentioning hardware MorphOS could support.

We already have faster processors then the Pegasos supported.

Once 2.6 is released we will finally have support for G4 powered Mac systems with an expansion bus.

New drivers for the R200 will offer improvements like shader support.

Things are moving along well and I'm sure many of you are as happy as I am about what we'll soon receive.

The leaks about the G5 are exciting, but I can wait. The 7,3 G5 models offer more processing power, but we don't really need that yet. And the G5 won't offer us any real new GPU choices that we can't support with the G4. Yes I know the last G5s supported PCIe, but are those 7,3 models? And even if we support PCIe G5s, the highest performing ATI based video cards (that have BIOS support) use R400 GPUs.

The video cards we're likely to see on the G5 (at least at first) are R300 based (9600-9800).

Without some work around that eliminates the need for an Apple compatible BIOS, our video card options end at the R400. So while everyone is quick to point out that the G5 will give us parity with the CPU power of the X1000, the X1000's support of the R700 series makes parity with their video cards difficult.

And does any of that matter for the near future? Of course not! We currently have the fastest Amiga-like OS running on the faster systems than our competitors.

While other alternative (Amiga-like) system supporters focus on what they don't have yet, I'm going to try to focus on what we've already got. A better performing, AVAILABLE product.

Edit - One quick qualifier - I wholly support those of you who are asking for support for older, slower hardware. Every time someone looks at the cost of entry and compares the Efika (or a used Mac) to anything under AOS (especially the X1000), MorphOS looks like the better alternative.

    No, they are PowerMac11,2.

Thanks Andreas. It seemed unlikely, but I was having trouble locating specs covering anything other than the AGP G5s.

And its not that big an issue if we're stuck using video cards with Apple compatible BIOS'. I can live with AGP.

Yeah -I am kinda kicking back, relaxing, and having fun with my Mini and Efika..but with a steady eye on Craigslist/Ebay for when the time is right. No use speculating, purchasing, and then ending up with a "DOH!" moment.

Then again wait until we hear the MorphosUSA announcement :)

    <sorry, I couldn't resist>

I rather feel I lucked out with my prior purchases. I've got a Powermac with an Nec based USB 2.0 card, a Soundblaster Live, and a Radeon 9250 all ready to go when 2.6 is released.

That should keep me busy during the interim between the next and following releases. I might buy an R300 based AGP video card and keep an eye out for a 7,3 G5, but I'm happy with what I've got.

"DOH" moments aren't hard to avoid if you pay attention to the statements of the developers.

G5 would be really nice. OWB can still be a bit sluggish browsing some sites and playing videos, but otherwise G4 1.5GHz on my Mac Mini is fine. Maybe there could be hardware CAIRO acceleration.....could help?
    A4000/060/PPC-200MHz, A4000T/060/PPC-233MHz, CD32, MicroA1, Pegasos 2 G4, AMD Phenom Quad Core 2.5GHz, MacMini 1.5GHz/64MB VRam...mwwmwahhh :)

That's it, not more powerful hardware, but cleverer software. Pity that, many times the former is easier to obtain than the later. Shame, but that's computing life nowadays (or since twenty years, more precisely).
Go figure why there are so many brilliant programmers in less developed countries. Lack of resources is a must to justify efficient coding.

Nope. AROS has the faster hardware ;).

Has this actually been confirmed? I guess f.ex. VBO support would probably be way easier to implement & would have much more impact on performance.

Besides, isn't R200 officially OpenGL 1.3 compatible? I think glsl was first introduced as an (optional) extension for OpenGL 1.4...

Not saying it would be impossible to implement shader support on that, but huge task...

Okay the most advanced and complete OS running on the fastest hardware

    or even if you like

The fastest ,most complete AmigsNG OS running on the fastest PPC hardware .

That was my focus. I don't really think about AROS that much as it runs on a different platform and every time I try to load it on my PC somethings (multiple things) don't work right.

G5 would be great. Since my x86 system passed out, it would be a cheaper
substitute to run Mos and other systems. (daydream):-?
But at the moment i'm happy with my Mini.
