OK, got the efika built and am trying to get going on Morph.
I have morphos-2.2-efikainstall.img on a USB thunb drive attached to bottom USB port on Efika. Top USB port on Efika going to a hub in which I have a keyboard and mouse attached.

Upon boot while holding escape key I get Welcome to SmartFirmware message at top and an ok prompt.

Upon typing the following statement : boot scsi:0 morphos-2.2-efikainstall.img
I get error while trying to load or boot.

    what am I doing wrong?

what kind of pendrive are you using? Some Kingston models make problems with Open Firmware. Check if your thumb drive is seen in OF. You can do it (for example) like that:

    Code:

    cd /builtin
    cd usb
(cd hub1 - only when your thumb drive is plugged into a hub)
    ls

and see if OF lists your drive (it should be i.e. scsi1).
You can try plugging your pendrive into the hub too.

You may have to try a different USB thumb drive, as some are not recognized as well as others. I personally used an IDE to USB adapter and transferred the file to a 2.5" hdd from my PC then ran the install through the adapter.

It took a very long time and a few tries as the 1.1 USB port is very slow, but I finally got my MorphOS2.1 installed and registered. I have not been home long enough to try (again) to upgrade to MOS2.2 yet.

Others here can probably help you more than me. Good luck.

I typed show-devs: for usb here is what I get

    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000 (usb)
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/scsi@0
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/scsi@0/disk@0,0 (block)
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/hub@1
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/hub@1/device@1
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/hub@1/device@1/keyboard@0 (keyboard)
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/hub@1/device@1/input@1
    builtin@F0000000/USB@F0001000/hub@1/device@1/mouse@5

So it appears to be seeing the hub, and keyboard + mouse attached to the hub. It also appears to see scs@0 attached to actual Efika port.

I am still trying everything at this point but no success yet.
I tried running USB to PS2 keys/mouse adapter in one port and thumb drive with boot image file on it in other port . I no longer have hub attached. PS2 keyboard working just fine in this configuration. Upon boot, thumb drive will give its usual blinky light routine. I did show-devs in this config and it is now a simpler report regarding USB.

    usb scsi@0
usb scsi@0/disk@0,0 (block) <-- what does "block" signify?
    usb device@1
    usb device@1/keyboard@0
    usb device@1/mouse@1

everything looks cool to me, just keep getting error while trying to load or boot...

So now I have tried writing the .img file to a cdrom. cdrom attached to efika usb port now via usb to 40pin adapter. CD fires right up when I give it boot command but get error:cannot open file for reading or writing. THis is a new one.

    Error ridden and getting irritated......

Hmm... And how about using the MorphOS 2.1 or 2.0 boot image? I know at least one guy that says he cannot boot from a 2.2 img while successfully booting from 2.1...

I've done some tests a few weeks ago on my Efika and it turned out that when the boot file was written on MorphOS the machine booted flawlessly. When written on my wife's PC it refused to work (I didn't repeat it though). But that won't help you (unless you can install an older version perhaps).

I had problems with a UB3-formatted usbstick. I deinstalled UB3 and it worked fine. ANd are you sure it's formatted in fat ? And since 2.2 release installing from USBstick gives me problems anyway, but a 2.5" drive in an usbcase works fine ...

    just some ideas...

I reformatted this usb drive as fat32 within win xp. re-downloaded the .img file and copied to usb drive. same results.

I am not sure where to get older versions of efika boot.img. It is tempting to try out as I am 100% dead in the water with 2.2.

I have also tried using different USB stick altogether, this one only 1mb in size. It too doesn't function.

Is the Efika truly this twitchy when it comes to USB drives? What are all available methods of booting this .img file? USB obviously will not work with this machine. What other options do I have and exactly how can these other options be done?

hey make sure the usbdrive is readable on something else, then d/l the file again. check all spelling when typing and characters. swap usb into bottom keyboard/mouse to top and reset a couple of times, since efika may not read the usb 100% all the time initially. type slowly, and do not return immediately. If that's a no go get a cheap 512mb scandisk usb, or something, but the
hd may or may not work. hope you get it going

    i give up.

everything looks good from whatever query of system hardware I make via firmware commands. Keyboard USB devices work fine whether it is a specific USB version or PS2 version running on USB adapter. Full sized CD drive running via USB adapter spools up when commanded.

Just nothing functional on any thumb drive I throw at it; new-old-large-small (all FAT formatted). Tried downloading .img file directly to thumb drive. Tried all port combinations. Removed every un-necessary connection from board and just ran basic stuff absolutely required. Same damn thing. Ran with hub and without it. always 'error while trying to load or boot'

it just wont go. Is it really this complicated?

Don't give up, and NO, it is not that complicated. Some people have had no problems and the install goes very smooth. Others have had similar problems like what you are experiencing, but the reason is sometimes obscured from the user. It may be something simple that is being overlooked, or it could be a defective EFIKA board. Do you know anyone near you that also has an EFIKA that could swap out their hdd into your case and see if it then works? If it worked, perhaps they could then clone the hdd to give you a working system. The registration has to be unique to your EFIKA's MAC address, so doing what I have suggested is not piracy, you would have to register your install to remove the limitations of the demo version.

is the drive fat (fat16) formatted? older jump drives work better. I was where your at with these issues, it will go with patience. once it goes, make sure you also have the morphos-2.2.img on the same drive, or handdy, unless you plan to d/l once prompted through internet connection. check typing including spacing.

Well I did something entirely different. I took an old digital camera I had, reformatted its SD, copied the boot image to it, attached it via USB and bingo it started to go. And now I have blue setup screen. Well this is a lot further than I was yesterday.

Thanks to all people helping out! It is time to start rocking to Morph2.2!!

OK, I went through prelimary install activities, got ethernet set, partitioned my 250GB drive into 2, formatted each, downloaded .ISO file to primary partition, installed.

When I start machine it will go to firmware promt.
    So I typed in boot hd:0 boot.img.
Butterfly comes up and it says at bottom MorphOS2.2 loading....

    Just hangs there though.
    What did I do wrong?

OK, I went into HD config and selected 1st partition as boot priority 0. So when I reset machine it comes to firmware prompt and I say boot hd:0 boot.img. Now the system comes up. Is there any way to set this to happen automatically?

HD config is wicked cool by the way. I am used to original Amiga rude and crude version. Morph's kisks *ss !

Sure. Enter these commands in Open Firmware:

    setenv boot-file boot.img
    setenv boot-device hd:0
    setenv auto-boot? true

Thanks Krashon, that did the trick. Machine boots up straight to Morph 2.2 now.

Well I have been playing around and doing general tuning chores. This is very much like AmigaOS so no problems working anything. I have visited various sites and downloaded stuff so I will be busy getting all of that to work. So far so good. As stated previously, I really liked using HD Config. Ambient is very nice. Excellent job in my opinion.

So coming directly from old Amiga, What kind of auxilliary files should I be looking for as I get things set up? datatypes? libraries? etc...

    Thanks everybody.

MorphOS 2.x is pretty much a complete system, IMHO, and you will need to install libs only when strictly required: if you come from an Amiga background you know how it works, if an app asks for a lib, search on http://morphos.lukysoft.cz/en/ first and then on AmiNet. If an app doesn't start and doesn't ask anything, in SYS:Tools you will find Snoopium, the MorphOS version of SnoopDOS coming directly with the OS.
The only thing I suggest to do is copying the rexxsyslib.library from your original 68k AmigaOS 3.x (which is very likely you have) to SYS:MorphOS/Libs/ (rename the MorphOS one), and enjoy the system.
You may want to try AmiNetRadio for music (and all its players and plugins, many are MorphOS native) and latest MPlayer with GUI for videos. Try to configure Ambient MimeTypes: you'll find its dead easy, and makes really a great system to use, and configured to suit your tastes.

If you want some additional speed, on Efika, change MUI settings in Global MUI Prefs to Presets -> skin:Mahalaxmi, from the Settings pulldown. And try the Mahalaxmi skin as well to get a consistent look. Then you can adjust everything to your tastes (you know, it's MUI), or decide you can live with a bit slower setup with more eyecandy.. ;-)

    Have fun!

    Kind regards,
    Andrea
