Where to start?

This may not be the right forum to post this in, if so please direct me to the right one. I've recently rediscovered the elegance of the Amiga thanks to WinUAE and I'm realizing how much I've missed it. I remember MorphOS being around when I sold my Amiga but I never really looked into it. After a few days browsing around to see what's current in the Amiga world MorphOS seems to be the most forward thinking, current OS that captures the essence of what Amiga was (of course this is just speculation since I've never actually tried it).

My question is, where do I start in terms of getting a MorphOS system up and running? I'm a little wary of spending money on a bunch of dated Amiga, hacky Amiga hardware as I did in the past (I think I owned every A1200 hardware expansion ever made). I've also read that Pegasos is no longer being produced, which seemed to be the best (only?) option for MorphOS. So where can I get hardware? Is EFIKA the only option? If so how do I proceed, can I buy full systems, or do I need to build one from the motherboard? Can MorphOS be used with any other hardware? Sorry for all the questions, if there is a FAQ or something somewhere that answers these please let me know, otherwise any insight is appreciated!

If your really interested in running MOS on a budget you might start with a 2nd hand Pegasos-1. Just make sure it has atleast the April1-fix and known-to-work RAM included in the deal.

A new Efika might be (slightly) cheaper, but is also slower. For desktop-use even simple thinks like adding a CD-ROM or a USB2-card aren't really feasible (USB2-cards should work in Peg1, someone correct me if wrong). Don't forget that MOS isn't out for Efika yet, and while it might actually take only "1.5 weeks" it could just as much be 1.5 eternities :-x

Don't get me wrong, the Efika can be a cute little toy, maybe even really usefull on some occasions (when it runs MOS that is), but I wouldn't even think about replacing my Peg with one (even if I only had the Peg1).

I'd look for used Pegasos. Maybe Pegasos I if you want to get it really cheap, but make sure you get the memory with it as it's pretty picky about it. Pegasos II is more polished overall and I'd recommend it at least if you'd like to use Linux or MOL on it.

Hard to say if it's worth to wait Efika.. only MOS devs may know it :)

MorphOS also runs on PPC accelerators on classic Amiga, but it's not probably that good investment if you don't already own one.

In any case, you should check The Pegasos Book from http://www.wikipeg.org/ . It's really great piece of documentation.
